top pennel hook?

I've been using a 4/0 Viking (down eye) for the top hook on my cod rigs, and a 5/0 manta on the bottom.
I know you can get pennel manta extras but they don't bend out.

So my question is what, in your opinion, is the ultimate up or down eye top pennel hook for cod? :)

I don't use pennel rigs a great deal, but when I do I always use a circle hook for a pennel - either Mustad Demon Circles in the smaller sizes (a quick blast over a burner on the cooker then bend up the eye with pliers), or Gamakatsu G-Point Circles with an upturned eye in 3/0 & 4/0. Tha Sakuma Chinu's are also a nice hook.

I rarely use pennell rigs but when i do for the bottom hook its vikings with the straight eye, for the top hook vikings with the turned down eye so it sits in line without any kinks or twisting the snood

Unless your having trouble with your rigs why worry?
As the saying goes if its works why try to fix it

I agree mate, just wondering if there's anything else I can try!
Might give the circle hooks a go?

I just use matching mantas / varivas for both hooks. I used to bend the eye on the top pennel but don't bother now, there's no need. Twin 3/0 does for most of my fishing unless big fish are about or I need to lift fish up a cliff or pier wall. Not convinced with circle hooks but still on the fence and waiting to be proven wrong.

Don't use them much for cod fishing but when I do I use Varivas with the turned down eye. That said if I don't have them I just use ordinary ones with three twists around before pulling tight. Heavier snoods mean it doesn't cause much bother.

i use 4/0 vikings on my pennal rig without no problems at all...they are a great hook in my eyes as they can be easily pulled out pair pliers and bend them back into shape jobs a gooden;)
