Tournament Casting

There's some cracking distance rods like the m4 evo, 427 su and the century ttr there's loads to choose from but as the rod is important the guy behind it is more so cos if ya can't cast it don't matter what you buy mate, also if you buy sumit that's to stiff for you you'll never compress it and you'll lose distance.
Hope this helps

Well it's not the rod big foot it's man behind it!!!

Absolutely spot on.

I started tournament casting with a Carbon Metal Express, not the most "fashionable" of rods but perfect for learning to cast on and I did my first 200 metre (220 yard) cast with the CME. Moved on to the Carbon Metal Crest and it got me up to 224 metres (245 yards) and would have gone a lot more if I hadn't jacked it in as to be honest I'd rather the fishing than chucking.

If asked for one but of advice I'd say "learn to cast then buy a rod, rather than buy a rod and then try to learn to cast on it".

Learn with something you can bend mate alot more forgiving until it clicks into place it's mostly about technique alot of rods will get you over the 200yds mark.

I never found my distance changed using any rod while I learned. In fact the stiffer rods seemed to give more distance even though my technique seemed wanting.

It just can feel horrible when the rod 'owns your butt'!!! And you scew it left.. Therefore learn to cast it.

The reason I like the txl gt is because i can chuck 7oz with ease and its a brilliant fishing rod. Not over gunned in the tip being glass and you can see a flattie fart at range. It sits lovely in the tide but has the back bone to lock 2ft down.

I could prob chuck any rod within my capability within 10yards of each other on the field.

Once you start changing rods though it can halt your progress. Get one, stick with it cos it could always chuck further than most are capable.

I also wouldn't take to much notice of distances on the field either. One field varies massively from one to another. Scott you could prob go to steyning now and chuck close to 220yards in good conditions, yet go to nesa and only chuck 180 plus.

Scot you already have very capable rods!! TTR's and eliminators will both cast 275yds+.

Just listen and learn and then put some practice in and keep practicing. a decent OTG would be a good start and it works for Jamie Blakeman.

Me and Peter are more than willing to teach you but it doesn't come overnight. You need to practice the right things rather than flog away doing the wrong thing and losing interest. Getting the lead out wide and a good body position and fast punch pull finish are the keys to big distance!

Get all your reel seats moved down the butt for starters. You can't pendulum a 14ft 8 rod reel up very well and your best making the switch now.

Your size is certainly not a hindrance either, your blessed with all of the right things for casting. With the perfect technique you should be challenging the big boys and 250yds is really possible, you've already done 200yds but each 10 yds past that becomes harder and harder. You cant just turn up and hit 220yds you need technique to get past that distance and certainly wont do it with 30lb trilene though.

When you hear about big distances of 300yds plus dont forget these are on fields with a strong tail wind and often off a steep hill to help!!

Rods are rods tbh and down to personal choice like Peter has said the GT does it all but you will find the tips very very soft after using a carbon tipped rock rod, just dont mistake the rod as being soft it's a pokey pokey rod once you can get lower into the tip and butt.

Im after another TXL gt but I have a M427 and a TXL std here that im willing to let go at the right price!!

Ask yourself a question though casting on a field for outright distance or casting purely for fishing?

The trouble with most of the more flexible yet good casting rods is they are next to useless for fishing on the NE coast!

Learn with what you've got would be my advice. Even a £100 bobby thompson will do 250yds in the right hands

i got told of a very good ex casting instructor to learn to cast with a soft rod as the softer rods show all your faults then go to the stiffer ones a stiff rod will bite you if you miss time it but will also give you distance with a bad swing dont know the science of it but its true then just because you see people doing a massive high swing doesnt mean that will suit you a flat arc may suit you more look on you tube not many casters cast a text book swing but get a good basic swing then put your own touches to it its easier said than done as i still go back to a fishing pendulem i got told to learn of the ground first as when your about to hit the lead ofg its the same possition you should be in when swingging but again that didnt help me as my problem is pushing out with my left hand there are endless problems as little as there change them get it right and you will see the benefits the torney casters on here are very helpfull am sure they will help you more than i can but my advice us learn to cast with a soft rod a fully compresed sof rod learning is better than a poker thats got the tip compressed
