there are two knobs on the abu 7000

one on the left and the other on the right with a dial on it

can u tell me how I use these to tune the reel please

I am a fixed spool man mostly

They are just the end caps. They will slow your cast down. Start with them quite tight untill you get used to using the reel then loosen off until you get a "bit" of movement in the spool - this will speed up the reel giving a further cast. if the spool is quite central then just loosen the one on the other end from the handle.

Ive probably confused you more now but sure someone with a better way of explaining will come along soon :D

It's like a wheel...

It's like a wheel...

Think of the reel like a bike wheel - it's got a spindle/axel that goes through the centre. The knobs are there for two reasons - to keep the line drum in place and also to allow for drag to be altered.

the tighter your knob (ooer) the slower the line release from the reel.

Less drag means greater speed of line release when casting.

It's getting a balance of what is good for you

will it do the reel any harm if both these knobs are tightened up most of the time ?

it wont harm the reel but it'll effect your cast.. i'd start with the magnetic break(if thats what it is) on full and ease it off as you get used to casting it..

the other nob i would guess is for how much play your spool has on its axis i.e if you try to move the spool left to right it will move a little, i believe this also helps the line spool off better.

hi m8 as someone was saying earlier two knobs for diff applications, this is what i do used multipliers for years and years old git that i am use them for casting as well, the knob were the handle is drive side i use this one for putting spool in the centre loosen the left one off if you have to.once you have spool in centre i then tighten left knob up till there is no rattle on spool if yo move it side to side. i do not use the knobs to control the reel to make it go slower or fast i believe you are only putting undue pressure on spool spindle it is not neccessary reel abuse, if the reel is going to fast heres a few tips,1 drop line level 2 put bigger brake blocks in and put gearbox oil in bearings one drop in each 3 .just pm if you have any probs i can help

If you have 20lb-25lb mono with a couple of blocks it should be fine. To light a mono will need increased braking as there is no natural braking effect. You should loosed the end knobs so there is slight play in the spool. The literature that comes with Abu reels is a bit behind the times in my opinion.

With the knobs to tight it will stuff the spindle with time

hi kiwib ,if you buy mono over here say a 4ounce spool you get less on the spool with heavier line than thinner line so wieght on spool should be the same i think what do you reckon. i find hevier lines on multipliers harder to control than say 15lb mono strange that one i know. i still like brake blocks but i keep loosing them when talking end plate off to dry brake drum ie free from oil a must. some lads are gluing a single magnet to the inside plate of reel not a bad idea just a case of finding right strength you dont want one too strong or to weak.

kiwib , i ya m8 are you living over here or there if over there whats the weather like would love to move to that part of world but too old now.i bet the fishings great over there

used abu 7000 for as long as i can remember.tighten the handle side knob down and use the other side to set your float.the more it is tightened the slower the spool goes etc what oil you use is also a key factor towards how fast your reel runs ;)

been reading this thread, and have experience of tuning abu 6500 and 7000 size reels. the two knobs on either side are for centralising your spool 1st and foremost.they should be set so spool is central in cage and spool should have few thou side play.the manuals tell you to use the l/h side as a cast control brake, this is for lure fishing in the usa and is totally wrong for uk beach fishing.the spool speed is then controlled by brake block size and number, oil viscosity in bearings and line level:D :D :D
