Tunstall Report Sat 20th May

A bit belated I know however here is my report from Tunstall: Saturday 20th May,

Me and my farther enjoyed a rare fishing trip together up to Tunstall. The weather was awful - windy, raining with very few sunny spells
(for once the weatherman got it spot on - much to our peril!)

Anyway, not be deterred we arrived approx 10am not really fun of optimism. We opted for a spot of bank fishing (the decision of Boat or bank was made easy - all the boats were already out) anyway we got our ticket £16 inc 6 fish then catch and release! canny value I think!

We headed for the long stretch of bank that faces onto the car park. We were partly sheltered from the wind here and there was no other
bank anglers around.

Anyway after setting up by the roadside I spotted what looked to be fish working along the ripple. Armed with a couple of wet\'s/spider patterns (bibio on the point, Katie Mcclaren on the dropper) I went in search of these midge munchers! A couple of short casts (no further than 15yards resulted in a my first fish of the day...to the bibio, a 1 3/4lb rainbow.... After a few half heart plucks and pulls over the next 30 minutes, I decided to go against the grain and try and get these fish to take off the top. Now kitted out with a sedge muddler size 12 on the point and a black pannal on the dropper (ginked up) I started again with some short cast.
First cast, whollop, muddler smashed off the top, however the fish through the hook. next cast again whollop, resulting a rainbow about the same size as my first fish. This continued for the next couple of hours until I decided I should let my farther in on the action (who at this time had 2 on a hares ear).
The action continued over the next couple of hours and we both managed our limit\'s in double quick time and we were both sitting in front of the open fire in the
Black Bull in Wolsingham by 14:45.......Splendid!!!!

Overall a cracking day, top mark\'s to the fish! cracking condition, strong fighters and keen to take off the top, can\'t beat it!
Thanks to lads in the lodge, good set of lads who\'s first priority is to ensure people enjoy themselves, not just swipe your notes out
your wallet!

Photo\'s as promised!

Dead Cheap to join as well.

I fished there last thursday in a howling wind. I fished right next to the inlet on the carpark side in the sheltered bit. Checked my leader and there was a wind knot a couple of inches up, could have cut it off or changed leader. I actually thought I bet that gets smashed to bits. First cast on a dry fly (I\'m sick to death of hauling lures through the water) Smashed off, fish took off vertically just after, to flip me a finger. Nowt all day. Later on a lad fished started on the other side of the inlet, into the wind, he knew what he was doing like. 5 fish in an hour no lie. He told me exactly what he was getting them on, a slightly weighted Dawsons Olive, I put the same on. The dead water inbetween us out of casting range must only have been about 40 yards tops. The wind was that strong it made sense that if there was any concentration of food it would have been along that bank. I need to practice getting a line out into the wind! We met up in the carpark and he said I\'ll just have a crack where you were before I go. I told him I\'d set fire to his car if he took a fish (honest). Guess what? ...........He didn\'t thank chuff for that :D I love the place me although I\'m having a bit of a mair personally, beginners luck I think last year. Be there tomorrow hopefully. Need to spread my wings though and try a few other places agin.

The lads are canny James. The odd \"character\" as well.

£85 notes a year
£8.00 for a boat for the day weekends (bring your own engine or daft mate)

Thanks Gents! Photo\'s above as promised, I\'ve been away all weekend.. wrestling with Cornish Congers with the County House boys.... more to follow on that one in the Boat section!

Alan - I got your PM, I\'ll sort that out for you

Keep it up Charlie!

Cheers

cracking report james got me itching to go to tunstal again i used to fish there years ago before privetley owned we went up last year but no one in cabin read notice board to get day tickets from wolsingham p.o went back there never knew what i was on about lol so drove back to sharpley springs nice to know the lads are in the cabin taking payment for permits :P :) :)

Your right, I heard you had to get tickets in the Post Office, we just took a chance and went up to the lake for about 10am and there was three blokes in the lodge, extremely pleased to assist!

As Charlie righlty states for 85 quid its nothing but a good deal.

In the past I have fished tunstall in the morning, at lunch time fished the river (£5) stanhope, corner shop and go back to tunstall in evening.... Tremendous but bloody tiring!

I was impressed with Tunstall on my last visit! At least with so many season ticket holders, you know it will have plenty of fish in!

Good Luck
