two for a tenner

While on my lunchbreak i spotted two lumpfish in the wet fish shop, curious to know how much they sold for, i asked the man in the shop. He phoned someone at the fish quay, then came back to the counter and said two for a tenner. He then put then on the scales, so i felt them and they were all saggy bellied as if they had been stripped of their eggs. He said they were more of a display than anything else which is such a shame Is it illegal to remove the eggs from the lumpfish before sale, as it is for berried hen lobsters.

Dont think I've even seen a lumpfish but I think you could class them 2 as limpfish

On a similar note though, I was in ASDA the other day and looked at their fish counter, I've put back bigger to say the least some we're terrible. They also had Bass on display which we're around 10-12 inches long... aint they ment to be a lot bigger?

It seems there's certain rules for some and not for others and its no wonder things are in such a mess.

Is there any set rules for retailers and if you see a problem who do you call? (no ghostbuster jokes)

Jedix the Bass are farmed in Greece and are a much smaller size than our own wild sea Bass.

bought a couple of gilt head bream from asda at the weekend , they were farmed ,and tasted like nothing . the reason i say this is ,when i was a kid many many years ago, in the summer when there was no macky about we would fish on the bottom with rag and get dozens of them, tasted great ,havent seen any landed for 30 years why?

As stated, a lot of the Bass for sale in the shops are farmed in Greece and Turkey and are not under the legal limit. I would agree with Paul, the taste of farmed fish is not even similar to freshly caught fish from our shores. I have had Bass that I have caught and also tasted fresh Bass in Turkey and I know which is the best.

Seems the eggs make a decent caviar and popular around the EU but didnt find out if it was illegal, doesnt sound like it really. What an ugly fish also

Dunno about the legality, but lumpfish/lumpsuckers aren't listed (yet!) on the redlist for endangered species, however they are listed highly as a fish at risk due to the increases in catching them purely for the roe - thereby cutting out entire future generations, especially as they are not yet protected.

In Europe btw they like the fish smoked aswell as fresh, seems they're quite popular, bit like weavers that we'd normally either chuck back or more likely kill as a nuisance, which sell well in the south of France.

Thanks for the info 5150, this is bugging me now, i'm going to call by the fish shop and ask him if he managed to sell them. I could handle it if i thought they were a bycatch and dumped back into the sea, but it is adding insult to injury to strip them of their eggs and then put them on sale on the fishmongers slab, and i was told they dont taste nice.
