I am sure this will make some people laugh but when i was young (16) i was looking at what i wnated to do when i left school and because the sea intersted me i was very close to going for a marine biology.

Anyway i spent a day on a tralwer for prawns out the Tyne and loved seeing what was caught from the sea bed.

The question...does anyone know if they offer this service still? i.e day at sea...paying of course.

tyne trawlers

tyne trawlers

as rich said, they used to do it,there may be problems now with red tape ,liability clauses and a myriad of reasons i dont know about,or understand.

red tape indeed.

sea survival ceritificate, fire fighting certificate, first aid certificate, health and safety certificate are a bare minimum to just set foot on a trawler these days

there are a couple of loop holes that can be used, but finding a skipper willing to have you onboard might be tricky...

buy/read redmond o hanlon's book "trawler"

basically a few weeks on a deep sea trawler out of scrabster in the middle of winter by a journalist interested in what they trawl up from the depths

its a great read

can i ask what's the strangest thing you lads have hooked or brought up from the depths "off" the tyne plus do any of you boat lads ever go out fishing at night and if so what's the weirdest thing you have seen at night mine was lying back listening to the waves slap the side of the boat (28ft clincker) black black night when the biggest fireball crossed the sky was a sight i'll always remember was reports on the news it was seen all down the country it was a cold November night cant recall what year tho the sea was like a mill pond was peace perfect peace regards batt22

brieze block - thought it was the lunker of a lifetime

and indirectly my first doubler cod had a flip flop in its belly!

Not really hooked anything strange, bits of wreck etc

Strangest fish would be a lump sucker or a male dragonett

I have caught a 15lb+ cod that when gutted had a half squashed Orange Fanta can inside

used to work on the deep sea trawlers mate and omne of the weirdest things we hauled in was a whales rotten stinking head:( ,and belive it or not we could smell it when it was still well under the water ,we were spewing allover AND we had to get it rid of back overboard one of the worst things ive done :(

well thats winning at the moment i think i can smell it bet the trawl gear took some cleaning
keep em coming lads strange fish count too
