Unhooking flounders, plaice, dabs etc.

I do the same with a dinky set of forceps through the gills to turn the hook and push it straight up and out the mouth. Not unlike dealing with a deep hooked pike :)

I'm now flattening my barbs when the target is mainly likely to be flatties.

Had 7 last night and all just dropped off.
Thing is, there's nothing going to take a hook that's likely to be lost due to a flattened barb. There's nowt much big enough to make a real fight of it and strip line from the reel so barbless is OK for me.

I'm not happy with the way I'm getting so many foul hooked.
It's the way I'm baiting up that does it I'm pretty certain. A sandeel or ragworm up the hook and onto the line is quite long. I'm thinking that a flattie will try to take this sideways rather than from an end. So when I feel a bite and strike it pulls the hook across the front of the mouth and the hook goes in through the eye socket mostly.

Anybody got any ideas on how to combat this to make it more likely to be a mouth hooking?

ive been trying demon circle hooks and there working well.hard to bait with worm though and best if you hang the bait under the hook and not up the line.lip hooked most times and you don't strike a bite, wind into it and the fish hooks itself

Thanks 4 the tip. Anything that unhooks a deep hooked flattie clean 2 release it as painless as possible has 2 be good. Saw a bloke onS/S pier cutting the gills with scissors, ,,,,

One thing to note is that they only work with hooks big enough to pop out through the gill cover, or at least have the hook eye able to be reached through the gill cover, so long shank patterns like aberdeens in at least a size 4 are best. It doesn't work with small hooks or short shanks like sabpolos very well so a dinky set of forceps through gill cover are still best for those
