Uptiding

Hi Lads

what is the best set up for uptiding as we are thinking about getting the boat out around the north hartlepool area

firstly what line and reel size do you also use a shock leader

next do you use an uptider (i have one just in case )

what sort of leads plain, fixed wires, or breakaways also what sizes

any info will be a great help as i have done uptiding in the blackwater estuary but you used breakaways and casted forward of the boat i have read about casting down tide in the north east

sean

I think you are very much on a suck it and see what works.

First try what worked elsewhere...for the simple reason you will have confidence in it.

Personally I use a 4-6oz breakaway on a pulley rig. Out of hartlepool there are many rocky patches ideal for uptiding to the north. Tides are manageable on even the biggest tides and the depths are ideal.

Good uck and let us know how you get on.

BTW most of the hartlepool charter boats just drift the ground with bait.

Cheers
Dave

on my mates boat we've just drifted over the hard ground bouncing plain leads and bait along.
iff you do find a nice medium sand / shingle bottom you can anchor up and try some up tiding , but we prefere the drift method as dave mentiond
we seem to have better fish drifting than up tideing
each to there own i suppose
hope this helps some

there has been an increasing number of charters from hartlepool that have uptided over the last few seasons with excellent results majority within 1 mile of the heugh (spoil grounds etc) what i would do is uptide in the conventional way and bounce down tide a rig known as the south coast cod rig - 10 ft of 150lb mono tied with a loop in the middle leaving you with a 4ft and 6ft length fish this with decent quality 5/0 hooks in pennel on the end of each length with a large muppet above them, then bait up with upto 8-10 squid on each rig and bounce down tide with a 6-8oz lead (the bait seems a lot but have had even 2lb codling take both rigs).

if you ever have space for a crew member please consider me - i can do everything from wet the tea to scrubbing down afterwards.

Regards Jason

thanks sean that would be most appreciated. I also forgot to mention i was ex Royal Navy and can handle ropes, anchors etc.

Look forward to it.

hi jason

i have a shetland sheltie

not top secret but a little journey boat cruises at 20 mph and 2 hours steaming should do the trick

sean

that will put you in a few good places (off shore wrecks/the wall etc) - sounds interesting. you still in dubai enjoying the sun or are you home at the moment

Sean.

Call me picky here.

Uptiding in the NE is a winter pastime...mainly cos it keeps you close to home and catches a few fish.

So it cuts up a bit rough...you are two hours from home @ 20mph...but it got rough..so lets call that 5 mph...hmmm

Thats 8 hours from home...in rough weather...in a shetland sheltie. :(

Unless your plan is fishing the deeps on Roundhay Park lake I would think again.

My last three trips out have cost less than 20 quid in fuel...in fact i can probaby manage another trip or two on the same tank. The simple reason for this is that it is not safe (or necessary) to go far from home in winter.

You started this thread asking for advice on uptiding out of Hartlepool...now your plans are a fourty mile trek...in winter.

All I can say is good luck to yah and all that sail with you.

You need your head examining.

hi dave

well yes i understand that winter fishing is about close in but was just answering jason about been good with ropes

and i have my head screwed on and would not play silly games in the middle of winter

long haul trips are for the summer if we get one

sean

dave

sean did say this year in his post not this winter - i took it he meant summer trips for the long haul. I would not go out with anyone for that sort of trip in the winter and would look at the weather forcast in some depth prior to having a trip like that in the summer.

jason

ps got your pm just looking at the diary and will let you know.

That certainly wasnt the impression you gave in your post.

You only have to look at the amount of boat reports in this forum to see how bad the winter conditions can be.

My last trip ended before we left the tyne piers...in fact at lloyds jetty.

Planning a 40 mile trip is foolhardy to say the least.

Go out of the pool marina...head north...but stay within an easy ride home.

Any where north of steetly pier between a mile to three miles out will get you fish.

Your other plans should bear in mind the following..

Your winter uptiding plans are potentialy dangerous, and though I have no objection to you taking your own boat out on some far fetched plan...I do object to you risking the life of others by your plans.

Lets be honest...a guy says I just bought a boat and I know **** all about fishing out of hartlepool....but will you come with me...

Were going on a major offshore trip in the midde of winter...

Sounds like an offer to hard to refuse..

See the above news clips for my reason for saying that.

Charlie .
I have never had a post wind me up more than this on here.

OK...if i get barred so be it ..

This guy is proposing to kill forum members...thats my reading.

I've been out to the wall...which I think is his plans...i've skippered a boat out there twice and skippered one back three times..its a rough journey. All those trips were made in june (remember the shark fishing trip).

There is no way I would take my boat out there and I have 100% confidence in it...

Your mobile fone does not work out there..the radio is hit and miss...although the coastguard will always pick you up.

The thought of taking anything but a certified charter boat out there is stupid.

To propose a trip like that in winter is mental so say the least. Oh...I now hear its a summer plan...so why put it here in december/jan...Then its an uptiding trip with no anchor put out...

Ok...i lost the plot ...wont be posting again on this...

FFS I hope BIG_Sean aint a big guy ...

There is potential for a trip of that distance but to be honest its best done with a charter skipper who has a BIG boat cos its a long way.

No more posts ...honest cos I gonna get myself banned.

PS...if sean wants the GPS numbers I would be happy to post em...just so he doesn't miss it...cos its a big ocean.

You as an experienced boater and angler i totally respect your opinion but

i do think that you have got the wrong end of the stick. Yes Sean asked for advice on uptiding and then we moved on to me offering to crew, i then stated that i have had 17 years EXPERIENCE in the Royal Navy (during this time i drove everything from aircraft carriers to small ribs). I mentioned that i know my way around a rope etc ( because i know from experience that people that volunteer to crew do not necessary know their way around a boat and are not expecting to help out etc) if you then read Seans next post he says "dont worry about ropes as where i am intending going this year ropes wont be needed " which i read as a tongue in cheek response to my offer of rope handling and nothing else - certainly not an offer to as you say go on a major offshore trip in the winter.

Like i say 17 years in the navy gaining vast experience of the sea and how to approach it counts for alot - i have been out with several members from the board (thanks Norman, Bert, Richy, Dave Mason Simon) and other people with boats and i would always only go with the ones i feel are safe (boat wise, handling wise, radios, PLAN, weather etc) i used to post my own weather on here from reading the barometric charts and they were pretty accurate so i do know what i am doing - if i turned up to go fishing with a guy and i felt that there was any danger i would turn around and get back in the car - if at sea the guys i have been out with have been more than safe and we have come in on several occasions not just because the weather has got up but because there was a risk of it this has always been after we have discussed it and they have listened to my opinion.

if you read this and all of seans previous posts he seems to be a sensible guy and i dont think there is a case for any bashing as we are all adults and this site is there for sensible debate if that is misinterpretated then so be it.

Fishing is great but not worth loosing a life for.

Thanks for the concern it is appreciated but please read the thread again and see how it evolved.

Kind regards Jason
