Volante Catch Report 20th Oct 2007

Hi All,

Not a great day to be honest.

The day started well with a puncture on the way to the Marina.........car is on those run flat things so it got me there. Cost a fortune today though...!!!

Unpacked the gear from the car and carried down the boat looking like a Domino Pizza Delivery person. It was my turn to supply the food so I took the easy way out and got a big Pizza the night before and a Corned Beef plate pie....wonderful...!!!

We opted for a day Boat Casting as the wrecks now seem inconsistent to dead.

After anchoring up we cast the gear some 60 yds out the back of the boat and waited for the bites. We didn't have to wait long........the day started with a Codling to 2lbs for Davey with me following up with a brace of crappy Scotchies. The day continued in a steady fashion with 12 Codling to 5 lbs coming on board. As the tide slackened off so did the fish. As it was a small tide it took the boat an hour or more to move on the anchor and face the other direction. We only picked one fish up on the afternoon ebb, a Codling of 2lbs.

What started off so well ended off being quite poor...most of the other boats out of Sunderland didn't fair to well either with some opting to return to the dock early.

Highlight of the day was seeing two very young dolphins playing around appox. 100metres from the boat, (in fact these are probably the reason for the lack of fish).

Food wise today was poor. Cold food.......simply not good enough. There were infrequent cups of Tea and Coffee but that was little consolation. We did have half a pig and plenty buns on board to make Bacon Butties but the skipper was too lazy to do any cooking. Marti and myself are considering jumping ship and finding a more accomodating skipper, the service we are getting at the moment is poor to embarrassing. I hope Davey reads this and feels suitably shamed...!!!!

Update..................I've just spoken with Davey who is also out today and it's just as bad apparently.

Roll on my upcoming Shark trip the davem2005.....!!!!!

Cheers,
Jeff.

Nice one Jeff! nowt rang with cold pizza :D

Good luck with the shark trip, they must be out there, the slaughter of another porgie strung up outside Seaview fisheries made the front page of our local rag this week.

Great report jeff, even though the catch was difficult.
I`ve not been out for a couple of weeks but the buzz around the marina is the same ..... comments of "It`s over for this year" seem to be ringing in the air. Still, I hope to have a few colder weather trips (get yer jumpers ready steve & tony :) soon so fingers crossed there`ll be a few around , may even dip the new anchor and warp I bought a year ago :) :) :)

Nice report Jeff.

Like you I am looking forward to our shark hunt, particularly when the skipper rang to ask what we wanted for our sunday lunch :) 50' boat with three anglers on board should be pretty tangle free affair.

Just as an aside I was speaking to a whitby skipper today and he tells me a shark was hooked and lost on the nine mile mark there yesterday ...

So it seems the shark season is not over...or is it just vast shoals all heading to Scrabster for us to catch up there.:D:D

I am going to have a couple of days out at whitby after them before our scrabster jaunt. If anyone wants to come along and help it will be midweek at short notice...costs should be minimal to say the least and no special gear would be needed.

Cheers
Dave
