Volante New Years Eve 2007

Went out today at short notice. After some morning maintenance to the boat the wind seemed to be dropping so we thought we'd give it a go. Got the gear and food together and went for the off....!!!!

We left the piers at Sunderland at around 11:15 and were greeted by a lazy swell. Not to uncomfortable as we planned to fish at anchor, drifting may have been a different story...!!!

We fished an inshore hard ground mark north of Sunderland. The tide was a small one today so not ideal for winter boat casting. We gave it a go all the same. Using the usual long flowing traces baited with Black Lug and Crab we cast lines about 60yds behind the boat. It started off very slowly as we still didn't have the tide so Davey got to his most important job of the day..............preparing lunch. The short notice meant we didn't have time to plan well so their were no appertisers today and lunch was to be served with only a small desert. The menu consisted of a Primeri of Venison and Red Wine Sausages and the Secondi was an Applewood Smoked Bacon, (Shoulder cut) both served on Wheat Bread with a selection of sauces, (Bacon and Sausage sandwiches really...!!!). Desert was a crunchy dark chocolate concoction.....not bad for short notice.

At this point the usual Cleadon Club spies, (Bert and Sless) gave us a call from from the adjacent rocks. Bert was his usual complimentary self but seemed even more aggressive than usual with his burly sidekick Sless in tow.........(sandancing to$$er$....Ha-Ha). Also spoke with Dave M who went out today.......a pleasure as usual Dave.......(especially having spoken with Bert only minutes earlier)

Anyway.......back to the fishing. The fish started to come on with the tide and all fish were caught in a 1.5 hr period. Dave landed 6 x Cod to 4lb........I finished second as usual with 4 x Cod to 3lb. All the fish seemed to be very shy with the bites today. Usually this time of year the bait is swallowed up quickly resulting in the rods rattling like hell........not today for some reason....bites were very slight.

Anyway as the tide slowed down around 15:00hrs we got the anchor back in and headed for the dock. Not a bad day really........3 hrs fishing and back home for an evening swallow...!!!

Finished the day off with another call with Bert. Apparently he and Sless were on a species hunt today and Sless caught a flying fish........!!!!

All the best for 2008 everyone.........

Jeff and Dave "Volante".

Nice report Jeff,

Thank heavens I never took your advice. The text you sent saying its too rough arrived as I approached the tunnel...at which point I said fork it I'm off anyway...and I am glad I did.

First thing I found was the battery on the boat that runs the electrics was totally flat. Seems as though the split charge relay has been resting on the deck in some sal****er. The electrodes have disolved and cut off all power to everything but the engine starter. Quick rewire to power the radio/gps and finder from the main battery and out to sea.

Went out of the Tyne and headed north about 1/4 mile and down went the hook. A large but regular swell coupled with the offshore wind meant a quite pleasant fishing session and as you said the sea was dropping off but with the occasional big wave although the beaches looked rough with the offshore wind catching the wave tops.

Food? whats that?...Did find a Werthers Original left over from the summer but the taste does not go well when it has been soaked in salt and old mackrel guts.

Before I had the second rod out the first one was into a fish which was the best of the day at about 4lb. This was quickly followed by a bite on the other rod...a nice cod that would have easily gone 10lb+ but by the time I had found a gaff the 4/0 hook pulled out. The hazards of fishing alone...it happens.

Changed to 4/0 - 6/0 pennels and finished with 3 keeper codling, 6 whiting, and about 5 flatties ( yep on a 6/0 ) oh and one dab that got its teeth tangled up in my bait elastic. Its unbelievable that you can get 8" flounder on a 6/0.

Can in at the same time as you, would have stopped longer but had no lights.

A nice end to the year...and may even have a go tomorrow as the wife is ill and doesn't fancy going out tonight.

Happy new year to all.

Lets see if I can make the first boat report for 2008 :)

Cheers
Dave

Two great reports as always to finish the year off.

Jeff, I'm surprised Davey doesn't take bookings for just the food :p :p sounds like you had a canny day again mate, nice way to spend a few hours.

Dave you should always make sure you have a packet of mints with you or take someone that does mate :D :D :D

I will have to do something about that censor lol, but for now we will know you as the man that put the **** in sal****er lol. Hope you manage a good day tomorrow mate.

Jim.

There goes that censor again...the words Jeff and barnett misteriously appearing in the same sentence...that really needs looking at Jim :)

Not a mint man myself...I much prefer a handfull of nuts...slightly salted. The werthers have been traced back to Oblickta and a trip to scotland back in late 06.

I thought I had got all the escapee's but the work on the batteries must have unearthed a sleeper hidden between the two. Perhaps the slight taste of aged mackrel has been mistaken for what in actual fact is the Essance de Baterrie Acide.

The trips on for tomorrow...out about 12...and a spare place is anyone fancies blowing away a few cobwebs PM me before 10 am....particularly if you have a box of squid in the freezer :)

Cheers
Dave

I will have a look mate and see what I can do. Not having met Jeff yet I can't comment lol.

Hope you have a great trip tomorrow mate, oh how I wish I could join you but unfortunately there is more chance of walking to the moon at the moment.

Jim.

I was just wondering tonight, were they still doing the tar barrel racing up your way tonight Mark. Still havn't seen it yet but still fancy a look some time.

Jim.

aye, the tar barling still happens in Allenheads, 20 nutters with wooden barrels fittedd to their nappers, pour a gallon of napalm (probably) and leg it through the village!!

gave it a miss this year had a quiet one in, time for reflection, absent friends and all that

year before last was a corker though, major snow storm and ll the power went off in the dale. the only lighting in allenheads was the barlers, geet big walking street lights - even the local Plod was bladdered that night, one had to be accried to his car, gives me an idea for community servicing sentencing, save on electricity with the added advantage of of possibly some scroats catching fire

way this country is going, surprises me that health and safety haven't ****ed all over their burning tar barrels

highly recommended night though for anyone thats never been up there, take a virgin with you for midnight sacrifice and the beers half price

That is what Yvonne and I were talking about tonight lol. I will PM you next year for details and hopefully have a drive over if I can.

Jim.
