Hi Madcast, you are probably best getting a 7000C / 525 mag if it's for your winter fishing, all depends on what you expect from the reel,if you need something for kelpy work,i swear by the 535.

If it's for the rougher ground as the 7000 I would recommend a Daiwa SL30 which can now be picked up for around £68.

For rough ground work I use a Diawa SL30SH and an Abu 7500C3CT, these are both fantastic reels, capable of good casting distances and rugged enough to withstand any type of fishing, word of warning though, if you have small hands you might struggle to get your thumb over the top of the SL30SH as is sits quite high on the reel seat.

For clean ground work any of the small Abu reels can not be faulted (6500s), I use the original black rocket with a Diawa 7HT and these fly. I have a mag elite as well but have never used it yet, probably cos I'm that happy with what I have I'm reluctant to change.

My favoured reel is the 525 Mag. It can be set up fast or slower using different bearing oil (same as any reel I suppose). I quick retrieve and very sturdy. Very little maitenance required and a doddle to service. Everyone has their favourites though.

For fishing rough ground it would have to be the Penn 535 for me, for the beach a 525 GS. I do have a Mag but prefer my two GS reels.

If you happen to decide on a 535 a little word of warning. Do not over fill it as it will cause you problems with birds nests. Keep it about a 1/4 of an inch from the top and you will have no problems.

Jim.

got to agree with the 535 mag....Had mine 4 years now...lost a screw or two but easily replaced . Great for bullying big cod out of the kelp!
