has anyone fished off warkworth pier. is it allowed, is it any good, can you get a vehicle down to the pier across the dunes, i remember many years ago doing it in an escort van but not for fishing purposes i was young then lol
We fished warkworth a couple of years ago. I think the access road is gated & locked though. Park in the public carpark (the one with the toilet-block) next to warkworth caravan site an a path goes straight down to the back of the dunes halfway along the beach. The track to the pier goes along the back of the dunes and is much easier than walking the beach.
If you can, put a pushbike in the car and ride along on that 'cos its a good half hour walk minimum.
You could get a car along there, but as I say, there's locked gates at various points. If it weren't for them, you could get right along the breakwater in a 4x4. (Hmmm!!!!)
I fished Warkworth pier a couple of weeks ago from low to high tide and caught nothing but a couple of sandeels on my spinner. When I was a kid we had a caravan at Warkworth and I would fish almost every day, the long walk seemed shorter then and as mentioned sometimes we took the car. Fishing after any heavy rain was a waste of time as the Coquet turned the sea brown. Also as the tide comes in it is very hard to hold the bottom and you can find your tackle being swept around into the harbour. I always fished right at the end on the broken bit, a small jump in daylight but be very careful at night or if it is slippy. On some of the higher tides even on a fairly calm day occasional rogue waves can sometimes come over this pier, there are no railings and it is not a place I would take children personally. I have caught many flatfish, coalies, mackeral and seen dogfish, cod and a couple of bass over the years but often find one day is brilliant and the next is dead. Fishing the tide in around dusk seemed to be the most productive time, you couldn't fail to catch a decent coalfish if you used mussel as bait. I really love this pier as it has many good memories for me but has now failed on my last 3 visits to live up to them. Might still give it another few goes though
Anyway enough rabbiting on, give the pier a go. I would love to hear how it went. Good luck
