Warkworth Pier

Had a "treck" today and fished a few hours off the pier.

Anyway, just curious if anyone know when and how(roughly) that bit at the end broke off?

cheers.

Been googling and so far can't find any info. I remember it had quite a few repairs done around the early eighties because it had loads of holes in it. I heard it was storm damage but on a mission now to find the truth :D

I should be up there in the villiage over the next couple of weeks, someone must know.

I think it was storm damage in the 1920's, got a photo from 1910 when it had a massive hole in it about 50 yards back from the end but the end still intact. My dad remembers the end being like that in the thirties so that could narrow the dates down.

The broken off bit is only about 10ft at the end of the pier. And it looks like the foundations have gave way so its dropped a bit.

About a 3-4ft gap at the top between the main pier and the broken off bit, but its on an angle :red: if that makes sense? Should have taken a picture of it as well.

First time Ive been just interested to know its history really.

it would be good to see the pic mate

I know what you mean :) as a kid I would jump back and forth without any hesitation. I take my time these days :D

Maybe gaps look bigger as you get older :D

Lovely seeing those old pics :) It looks like there were buildings in the bay next to the north pier, no sign of them now. Any idea what they were ?

Thats the bay where I caught my first ever fish as a kid, an eel :) followed by a flounder.

Great photos mate, thanks for sharing

on the picture I took the other day you can see the fittings where that "lighthouse" was bolted down, and also those two wooden "beams" at the very end of the pier. So its broken off pretty much just on the edge of where the "lighthouse" foundations are?

Thanks for that mate. Excellent pics. That lighthouse on the south pier is a right old obstruction when chucking like, clipped it a few times and me lead marks on it:D Haven't fished it for years for that very reason.
Looking at the pics it was a canny busy place back then.

there cracking pictures of how thing`s used to be up there, a enjoy looking at old pictures like this,
it`s funny how all the older lads can tell how much better the fishing was in them days.

just shows how everything has been overfished/fished out.

thanks for sharing them with us.
