washed up at horden today

went for a walk down horden beach today sea if anything lying about when i got along todene home i found a porpoise washed up looked like it hadnt been dead long as it was in good nick well apart from being dead it had a few marks on its top you can see in pic dont no what they cud b there was a tonne of weed n kelp washed up around it and old line n stuff all the crap from the sea was in about a 50 yard area and the rest of the beach was clear anyone have any ideas tohow it may have died it was about 4 foot long could it have been the stormy sea you think just seems strange there were 2 sea bass too lying next to it both bin got at by the gulls were canny size too

i don't think it was the stormy sea that killed it, porpoises are quite capable handling anything the sea throws at them, sometimes animals just die, mind you the two dead bass next to it is a bit of a mystery.
 
The death might have been due to the person standing on it - might have squashed it to death !!!!!!!!!

When I worked at sea, drift netting for salmon, we used to get the odd porpoise in the nets.
The odd one drowned but most we managed to release without any harm.
There were the odd ones that got cut by the net and no matter what we did, we could not stop them bleeding, we did try.
We even got in touch with the Northumbria University marine place to see if there was any way of stopping a porpoise bleeding to death and were told that we would not be able to stop it.

If the porpoise you found had a cut on it, that would more than likely be the cause of death.
A porpoise's blood does not congeal very good and it tends to bleed to death.

Also could have been natural causes.

We came across a dead grey seal washed up on Saturday too, couldn't have been dead long it just looked like it was a kip :(
