Water patrol officers at Sunderland

just thought I would give anyone going in and out of Sunderland a heads up on a new patrol thats starting up full time from Monday.

The port of Sunderland has employed a few people to be out on patrol in the water (4 m rib, bright orange called "Patrol") to mainly stop people speeding. As the speed limit from the pier entrance and all of the river is 6 knotts the patrol will be trying to stop people breaking the byelaws along with making sure people are safe and not being stupid in the river basically.

Any questions ask I'll try and answer them.

As I'm one of the people involved in this the port has kindly just paid for me to do my power boat level 2 which I got my card for today so thanks to the port and if anyone spots a little coloured guy in a orange boat called patrol say hi to me ;-)

please correct me if i'm wrong, but the jetski'ers pay £100 to use the ramp which is in the river, cant see them doing 6 knotts....bit unfair i reckon...

Byelaws have been in place for longer than I've been alive and the 6 knott rule longer I think people can do what they want out of the piers but its always been 6 knotts in the river

There has been a few patrols running already so been all over at 6 knotts and yes it takes forever to get up river but not that long to get out past the piers (where you can do what ever speed you want).

Good on the port of Sunderland and in my view not before time, hope it works out and would be nice to hear you reports on progress.
A few years ago I had I jet-ski doing a slide and wash towards me,showing off how clever he was and how good he could contol this jet-ski,well he did hit my boat and he was carrying a young kid on the back, bloody stupid idiot.
It been posted before by me that all these crafts should be marked up with a big number and made to log this with the port or Sunderland Marina so they can be identified, the problem is to me all I could say it was jet-ski and the colors it was showing, and I did report it to the port of Sunderland but what could they do as there was loads of jet-skier in the river ata the time.

The river and it's estuaries are their for all boating activity's and should adhere to the 6knt rule.

not every1`s goin to agree, but a think it`s a step in the rite direction. next they mite patrol the piers, but that`s for another section.

The patrol is mainly based within the river but we can get called out round the beach if there is a problem in the swimmers area.

Been a few deaths along the river which no one wants so if the patrol helps then it is worth while getting abuse telling people to slow down!

as has been said m8, it seems like there`s rules for fishing craft, and another set for certain jetski`s, a say certain because there not all the same show off don`t give a s*** about any1 else t*****.......!

The Port of Sunderland would be better of using the money to enforce the law they put in place about people drinking down on the pier and along the sea front.
But then again the spineless idiots dont have the testicle fortitude to do that.
They would rather be out in a boat chasing somebody that is doing 1 knot over the speed limit. Just like our useless coppers.

That's not the port of sunderland's remit, that's council and police to enforce that problem.
What the port of sunderland patrol boat is trying to do is to stop senseless idiots speeding and causing accidents to other boat uses such as sailing dinghies, kayaks, swimmers and such which use the river and inner estuaries
These spineless idiots as you call them are not to stop boats doing 1knt over the 6knt law but to stop boats and other water craft travelling fast and dangerous in the confines of the harbour.
It happened to me so I know first hand what someone in a fast jetski that has no regard for his own safety or any others that's out on the water,in my case his crashed into me and how he and his passenger wasn't killed amazed me,My boat took damage to port side with stress fractures and gell coat damage.
The repairs I had to stand myself because the jetski couldn't be identified,no markings shown so was just one of crowd using the river.
I understand all jetski users are not idiots but I believe there should be a area defined for them to use and not be mixed swimmers and small slow moving craft.
And by the way I think your attitude towards the port of sunderland and the police stinks.

here here harry  i use to use a putty off in the river to get to my boat and was tipped by some fool coming past at 20-25 knots with a skier on the back . there ppl need to be stopped. never mined the harm there can do to them self's. at times of the tide at depford there is objects just under the water in the center of Chanel if (2 moorings have shifted) with there ball attached . just think if a jet ski or skier hitting one of those at speed . at best broken ribs and worse dead . the speed limit is there for a reason. as harbors have dangers like submerged objects and craft that move slowly also anglers casting need i go on

Hi Harry,
Totally agree with you, especially the last line.
A few times when coming up the river I have just stopped the boat as you havent a clue
which way they (jet skis) are going to turn - rules of the road, what rules !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What I cannot get my head round is when I pay my yearly fees I have to produce my insurance certificate, why arent these people made to do the same thing ??????????.

Hi Davey,my point exactly mate, almost all vessels at sea need to carry identification marks, whether this is boat name or number on a sail on a sailing boat.
This as we all know is for communication between vessels at sea and port controllers to contact and inform shipping movements but also for search and rescue by the coast guard.
Now for some reason jet skies don't abide by these rules they show colors but mainly just manufacture colors.
I have spoken to port of Sunderland today and asked why there is no registration and no compulsive marking of jet skies when they pay for their launching fees at the Marina to use the ramp.I was told this is being looked into.
Because if this is the case then do they carry at lease 3rd party insurance in case of accidents and loss of life, they may do but its a grey area.
I asked could there not be a designated areas for jet skies to use and was told there is..up on the tyne" lol" or......out at sea near Whitburn steel, but nowhere within the harbour, there was a area for them to use some years ago up river but this is no longer the case due to two fatalities caused by jet skies.
The guy I spoke to at Sunderland port control was very helpful and does recognize the safety problems within the harbour and is actively implementing safety measures and by having this port patrol rib is making a start.
The guy I spoke to was Neil Mearns and he would welcome your feelings on this subject and can be contacted by email on [email protected].
or by phone on 0191 5532100
I am very interested in this subject due to my own near miss with jet skies.
