Weather was a bitch

well, as the title said, the weather today (Sunday 19th August 2007) was not good ............ forcasts have been everywhere from hot spell to ice but eventually ended up as a strong NE increasing wind with continual rain (not heavy rain just persistent)
Was the Marina Fun Comp today and a great shame that it was marred by the weather (once again, thats several comps this year)
Still, we went ahead and bounded out the river to be met by big seas, bad visibility and searing rain.
fished from 7.30 till about 12 when we finally gave up against the enormous seas and headed for home. Not a lot caught by any of the few boats that went out but eventually heard that we (or at least steve) got third place in comp with a baby codling of 2 lbd 7 oz ,,, that shows the catch rate on the day, very poor.
Drift was so fast it was impossible to hold bottom, and the lift on the sea was so high that even sandy bottoms looked like wrecks on the sonar with the continual change in depth due to height of waves.

Still, it was a good day out the kind of day that sorts the men from the boys (or is that bouys? :) )

Well Done Steve mate

Laugh of the day was Tony`s(Wallsendo) specially designed Tee Shirt

Great day again Norman, thanks !! despite extremely testing conditions ;) :D

I'm not ashamed to admit I nearly lost what little breakfast I had in my stomach a couple of times :( :D

Well done Steve on your position in the comp - hard fought battle for that Cod...well deserved indeed ;) :D

Great day as per usual ,loved every minute ,esspecially when kneeling down to bait up with the potential of a vomitting session from TGW :D ,

ha ha,

he won't be laughing when he has to put the mask and flippers on to clear the propeller in january.

hope you cracked the whip like a good master should norman....lol

eerrrrm yeah Tony, forgot to mention that scuppers (and gaps under stern doors) are meant to let water out, but in big seas invariably let it it LOL , even if your legs in the way ......... :)

Well done Norman.

Can i ask another question as regards to the drift.

I take it when the tides are big so is the drift therefore you move faster over a wreck or rough ground.

Alan our skipper at Seahouses was complaining about the high tide and drift and also the direction of the wind saying it was no good for cod fishing and better suited for Mackeral. I noticed when i had a pirk and muppets on just how far the line went out and how difficult it was to bounce it on the bottom.

Is a low tide better for boat fishing so the drift is not to severe.

Cheers Mick.

I forgot to mention that the wine and beer are shared cost Les ,I even looked for a monacle on Saturday for picture purposes ,but couldn't find one, Oh and by the way please don't think I'm a posh bloke lol .

Mick, (in my opinion, but others will have their own views) best catch time is when there IS movement in the water, ie the 3 or 4 hours between high and low and also between low and high.
drift is dependant on both wind and tide so if they go in same direction you move fast which is not good for tackle losses or catch since you spend so little time over a given spot. However its possible even in a big tide if the wind is going the opposite way to vertually stand still even though the water is running below you. So there`s no strict answer as it depends on 4 factors wind direction and wind strength, tide direction and tide strength ........
If I could control weather etc and I had a choice I`d fish the 6 hours tide rising from low tide time (therefore flowing from north to south) on med height tide with a 5 to 8 mph southwesterly wind (wind with south to negate the drift and west to keep the sea down) Oh and with the sun shining of course (and a bottle at the ready)

LOL with orange muppets !! :)
