Grip leads probably be your best bet on beach and river, well it is in my area anyway. Never had any problems with them. Can make them yourself as we'll if you buy a kit and can save money.

Normaly use 5oz namix on the rivers, they seem to hold bottom on most tides,
for the beach its mostly 6or7oz, all grippers.
Depends where you're fishing and what you're after mate. As the lads have said - big weights and grips for holding bottom. For flatties on sand I like light (4oz) watch leads. Cast, leave it a short while and if you get no bites retrieve a little. The shape of the lead disturbs the sand and can attract fish. This works really well with light rig body and hook traces.

As most have said 5oz is a good all rounder i sometimes use a grip lead if the tide is strong just remember if you have a lead that is round bomb shape it will roll more and giving you a greater chance of rolling into a snag i do like the one;s with the flat side's bi-pedo type but thats just down to me it also will depend on the cast rating of your rod one good thing to remember is to have a sock leader on your reel you need 10lb of line for every 1 oz of lead

My standard lead is the 150g Namix breakout (Dusty Bin special with bait clip). If it is too rough for a 150 / too much tide I'll go up to the 175g or on a calm day or if it will hold bottom I like to go down to a 125g.
Unless you are using a stiff rod the 125g makes fishing far more fun and on my TTLD / Primo Synchro they really fly distance wise and are far more fun to cast than the heavier leads
99% will be breakout leads, unless fishing in to proper kelp / rough ground with rotten bottoms when I'll switch to a plain bomb
