What size wieghts should i be using in my bag i have 8oz and 5oz, when i fished as a young un dad used old cutting bits from the pit quite heavy i remember, now returned to fishing after a long break so many different bits and bobs available

I tend to use 6 ounces for most situations. 5 ounces is fine for the river though. I would only use 8 ounces if I was trying to cast into a really strong headwind.

By the way my dad used to bring the nuts from fishplates home from the pit for me to use when I was a youngun. There must have been hundreds of arch girders set with a bolt short.

if it is shore fishing i use 5,6 oz sinkers.

cheers mate maybe if i can leave a few 8oz sinkers at home my shoulder wont ache so much

That's a good point. Try and guestimate how many leads you will need, ie number of hours you plan to fish multiplied by the number of casts per hour plus two or three spare. Not carrying an excessive amount of leads makes travelling a lot easier

Whatever weight you use don't forget to use a suitable shockleader (10lb of line for every oz of lead you're throwing). Wouldn't like to be stood next to someone casting an 8oz weight with 20lb line!!

i use 5 and 6oz plain and grippers, cant say i have ever used heavier than 6 for shore,rock edges and cliff fishing.
Have used 8oz and heavier off the boats.Take my advice mate and ditch the 8oz sinkers til you go on a boat.Oh and take Darrens advice,dont forget ya shockleader

Thats all i use 5-6ounce grip leads and plains mainly every where i fish, but if i have light rod i use 3-4ounce plains,grip leads more so the grip leads for bottom fishing and plains for spinning or fishing over the ruff stuff.
ah and a shockleader is essential as Mogthemackem sais.
