I was out on blyth pier today spinning and playing with a float. this funny looking fish was caught on a piece of sand eel.
Does anyone know what it is?

That is a Lumpsucker mate. Common in our waters. A very hardy fish with rough skin and bulky body.

With a face only a mother could love, what they lack in facial they make up for with bonny colours.

Well done for catching it!:)

Full marks to the guy taking them to the place so they can swim free in their natural environment

Found one of these at Whitburn in the mid 70's and like yourself didn't know what it was, so off to Jack Melton who used to write in the Sunderland Echo and got it identified - and a mention in his weekly notes. I think It was about late June and there was a glut of these lumpsuckers being washed up on the beach at the time.
