Hi all

Just been watching a few videos on youtube with time to spare, and came across this excellent video, filmed on Febuary 3rd 2011 in Shetland, Scotland...

Shetland Shore Cod - YouTube

Cannot believe that guys luck, the line snapped but cod just couldnt get away quick enough, and the size of the fish... a want one like that before winter ends, nice clean fat fish. Looks a canny place to fish too. :)

Great catch, well done that man!! :D

That probably weighs more than all mine put in 1 bag so far this winter:exclam: I would of been in that water with a net once it was within reach:yltype: and he just took it all in his stride puffing on his tab as if he catches cod like that everytime he goes out, not that i'm jealous of course (b*****d):D

He gave it every chance to get away and still managed to land it somehow.
Just goes to show, you need that bit of luck.
It does look a lovely spot there.

and he released it!...top marks as i would probably have rang home to get the wife to knock up a batter mix!

Makes you wonder why we bother with all the gear when you can sit comfortably and fish a pond like that?!?!?

£400.00 return ferry to Lerwick, I priced it all up last year. 300 mile driving each way then 14 hours on a ferry there and 12 hrs back on a ferry. Plus digs on top.

woudn't bother going up there, it was invaded soon after the video was circulated approx 12 months ago

they are / were resident cod who live in the loch, the locals have been catching them for years and returning them.

if that loch were in the north east of england it would be barren within a few weeks / months, judging by the amount of small stuff that many "anglers" on here take home as it was" belly hooked"

so anything over 2lb wouldn't stand a chance, let alone over 20lb.....

That begs the question, what is a keepable weight? I've kept codling of 2lb before and a bit less to be honest and then when filleted at home thought why bother, if it's belly hooked why not just cut the line, it's got a better chance. My New Years resolution is not to keep a fish of under 3lb (should rule me out fo taking owt home). Anyone else's views on this?

A sensible post at last !!!! We did have a unique aquaculture in the loch with some good sized cod that had grown steadily over the years. Since this video, the loch has been hammered and most of the healthy resident fish caught and killed. It was an ideal mark which is now almost devoid of cod with loads of coalies remaining. It is not my loch, but visiting and local anglers have destroyed something unique possibly in the whole of the UK. We all like our secret marks, but just think of the consequences of your actions when you pop off home on the Northlink ferry. Try the boat fishing, it is far better and a lot more productive than any shore fishing up here.

I was up there years and years ago when i was a child and looked over the side of a harbour crystal clear water about 15ft deep could see big size flounders i shouted to my old man see these massive flounder lying on the bottom he said they are probably the dead catch from a trawler so i dropped some pebbles into the water and eventually on target just before the pebble hit the fish it took off across the bottom :o was amazing.

Great video and sad ending for the loch according to the posts :(
