What fish ?

Moved up to South Shields a few weeks ago.
Having to kill time while finding work, so went to Marsden Bay for a walk today (not got my fishing tackle yet).
As you come down the steps near the first aid building, I walked to the left over the rough ground as the tide was going out.
There were at least 15 of these fish washed up. I have never seen one before, they are sort of Bream shaped, with a sort of rough but leatherlike skin, Grey to black, with red bellies, and a right old gob full of teeth.
Maybe some of you know what they are as they may be localised, but I certainly haven't seen em before !
Oh yeah, they all had there eyes missing too ! lol

Could it be a Rays Bream, nunerous reports on here about them getting washed up on our coast each year

Hmm..I always imagined lumpsuckers to be smaller, but...Deffo have a bream look to em. And may I just add, That they were a few inches longer than a size 10 boot - if that help identify
Plenty of snagged gear down at marsden I noticed ! LOL Not a fishing mark for the faint hearted.
Must admit, It made me want to have a cast or two - tackle graveyard or not !

Lumpsuckers come into shallower water early in the year to breed, probably been some huge lumpsucker orgy and some have carked it from orgasmic exhaustion

Looking at the pictures left by Lee I would say that you lads would probably be right with Lumpsuckers, nowt like a Rays Bream going by the pictures on the other thread.

Still fascinated, despite seeing these fish regularly as a kid, I think the last time I saw one in the flesh has to be about a decade ago on the rocks at S/Sluice (dead of course), yet recall loads at Amble as a kid in the 70's with my dad.....

hi kenny i just live over the road to beach on coast road,there are loads of lumpsuckers down coast .every year same time you will see them.as for the eyes the seagulls have had them.

just thought i'd bring this thread back up again,,

was walking the dog on marsden beach and saw one of these washed up mystel, was just wandering has anyone tried targeting them at this time of year??
