Well we are 2 month into what i call the boat season, what has worked best for people so far this year?

For me it is a 8oz pirk, the first season i can say a pirk has out fished my other methods.

PIRKS

Funny but I've had no luck with them really. Only been out a few times I suppose but for me feathers have been killer for mackerel & cod. Small white feathers with green strands of tinsel, we caught 70 mackerel and numerous cod + colies in the space of ~ an hour. Only had a small colie go for the pirk.

Going out again tomorrow evening so I'll give the pirks a proper try then!

Pirks , actually one pirk in particular , its caught me 4 cod over 8lb in the last two outings and at least another 60 smaller than that, I've packed in using bait , even if I'm using hokkais I don't bait them any more , I've had cod, ling, pollock ,coaly, mackerel and a pout all on this same pirk, how the coaly and mackerel get that treble in their mouth is beyond me , it's damn hard to get it back out again , the ling I caught had a baby pollock in it's mouth , still alive :o. I like fishing with the pirk , it drops nicely , dosn't get caught up in the flow , only catches one fish at a time (unless you count the baby pollock and the 7inch flattie that came out of a cods mouth) and with the hook attached by mono it's retrievable if it snags. It's chewed to bits now:)
I'll be back to the bait when the big ling put in an appearance though ;)

You will have to tell me how to fish a pirk because i cant get mine to last more than a few drops and lost over 40 of them so far this season :)

maybe this is a bit different but for me, a sidewinder with 2-3 ounces of lead shot above it, dropped to bottom and wound and twitched slowly for around 20 turns then back down - fished all day saturday with this method and caught far far more than anybody else on the boat! i use 40lb power pro braid and a 20-30lb class kenzaki braid rod which is (in my opinion ) perfect for the said method.
oh - and i found i lost next to no gear also!

I took the split ring off that attaches the hook Rich , then re attached the hook with a loop of 20lb mono , I've lost a lot of treble hooks , but I've still got the pirk ;) I fish with 50lb braid straight to a swivel and snap connecter thingy (technical term ) and attach that to the pirk , when I get snagged up I pull for a break , the hook either snaps at the bend or the mono link snaps and the pirk comes free. I jig the pirk a few more times , if I can feel takes with no hookups I reel in and attach another treble hook.
They are too expensive to lose :D

Its not really my favourite method but I do use pirks now and again and have hardly ever lost any. My method is as soon as I feel the wreck I immediately give it 5 or 6 turns of the reel to clear the wreck, jig it half a dozen times then drop back down and do exactly the same again. Also I never put a treble on it, just use a couple of 6/0 rippers and it works ok for me. My favourite method is to use shads, normally blue, 5 or 6 inch, this very rarely fails for me, so far this summer I have had over a dozen doublers (cod) and loads more very close to that weight. Just one final note, I never use any kind of bait and still manage (not through choice) to catch my fair share of ling (hate the things, lol).

Overall large daylights have been the most successful for me and have out fished a pirk. Pirks have been mixed: few cod and coaley but I’ve lost more than I’ve caught!
Tried a few flowing traces off a boom with shads/artificial fish on - just seem to attract whiting.

bit of a horses for courses question really as I have seen doubler fish being landed on geet big flowing traces with full squid and half macky combos on 10/0 hooks to 17lbers being caught on 6/0 orangey grubs with a manky bit of rag

my PB came on the pirk - but so far this year the fish have come on a variety of all sorts although in fairness the Pirk does seem to have come out slightly ahead from my own point of view

Had some great fun on the shads so far this year, iv even managed to get Jimmy, deck hand off JFK converted after giving me stick last year for using them, even Allans bought a load and selling them to the punters.
