I used to use Sakuma Manta or Varivas Big Mouth in 2/0 for hounding on the Hampshire / Sussex beaches. Smuts may be big fish but you don't need big baits to catch them; a whole small crab or half a big one well lashed on the hook will do the job. I once had three hounds on the same bit of crab hoyed back out after unhooking each one...

Always thought varivas and sakuma hooks came off the same production line but just named different could be wrong though.

i like varivas sal****er champions in size 2 to 3/0 for most of my fishing. sakuma phantom is a similar hook.

for 4/0 to 6/0 i like varivas bigmouths, again sakuma mantas are similar.

got some sal****er champions myself bill as you were telling me they were very good and you were right spot on and the same for the sakuma phantoms.

i like sharp hooks with a bit of strentgh but when i go fishing with me mate i take some wire cutters or pliers and cut the point off hes hooks while he not looking that way i do alot better than him please do not tell him this pmsl
