What reel please?

I need to stop changing my mind and buying/selling/swapping gear all the time. So with that decided, I am looking to get a fixed spool reel for a 10ft shore rod. I have a shimano baitrunner, but want to keep it good for summer spinning, so any ideas of what to buy please? Not a serious shore angler, so nothing fancy, just something solid that I can chuck 70 yards and will last a couple of years. Going 2nd hand as usual, due to Lynn's paranoia about buying new :)

Doesnt always work though Duncan, i started of with f/spools then moved to
multi"s and thought "thats it I"m set", i am now getting the itch to move back
to f/spools.
 
Steve, we went down the beachcasters, multis route, changed one beachcaster because it didn't fit in new car :red: realised we couldn't cast them for toffee! Sold the lot, moved to beach rods and fixed spools, got some stolen :mad:
Bought more (Lynn uses reel you kindly gave us for spinning).

Upgraded all the boat gear, which I am so happy with, took Duncan's advice on boat reels.

So now sticking with what we have got........no more changes :)

Just need advice on a fixed spool, then I am done........................................well that's the plan :o:o

See if you can get another baitrunner, nothing wrong with them from
the shore, or you could get another reel new for around £40,the daiwa opus
reel is ok for all conditions and you will deffinatly hit 70 yards with it.

I've been offered a Shimano xtr6000ra. Is that solid enough for the beach, with say 20/30lb line Steve?

Hello Mark the 6000 you mention in my opinion is not big enough to take 30lb line and not really built for heavier shore fishing,plus the price is steep.A much better option is the shimano st10000ra for just under £50 new.Whilst this reel will do the job,my own prefference would be a shimano aerlex 7000 or 8000 the blue one about £70 new if you shop about considerably less secondhand ill have a look round and PM you.

why not just get a decent set up that will last u years and take no notice ov the mrs bad idea when thay no what u are buying and the cost;)

You have the wrong end of the stick mate.................. we fish together, we buy together. She loves looking for 2nd hand bargains, she has got me at i too! We fish, maybe 8 to 10 times a year off the beach/rocks, usually when we come to the NE for the charter boats. Where we live, summer spinning is about all that is on offer, so we do a lot of that. We have no need to spend shed loads on gear we rarely use, but for the serious angler who goes out with his mates, I take your point :);)

c y point m8 was fishing with a guy this summer his rod and reel was under 30 quid looked nice cast very good did every thing he wanted it did cross my mind do u need 300 plus rods for most fishing or is more to do with look at my gear:confused: i did have a normark beach rod 13ft cost me 18 quid from a bootie caught just as many fish on that as i do now

Indeed. We bought 2 new beachcasters from a guy, also from others, a Penn Mag525, a Diawa 7HT, spent over £300 and couldn't cast them......... even with a few lessons :red:

So we thought, let's just get some gear we can use. We are total amateurs off the shore, but have managed a couple of cod, a few pollack and Saithe at Eyemouth. Around the NE we have had loads of flatties,whiting, mackerel, a launce, a sea scorpian and Lynn even managed a sea trout(Scotland) :mad: So we are happy with that.

Should have joined the species hunt :D

We are happy just messing about on the shore. We take our charter fishing more seriously, although still novices, and we have better kit for that. We love to learn and people on here are happy to help. We have learned so much about fishing from people off this site. Thank goodness I joined :)
