Reet lads n lasses, me and a few other hundred fished the Northumbrian open today, whilst fishing at Newton something dropped out of the sky! It was a blue parachute thing with summick bobbing along with it when it got into the water. Somebody rang the coastguard who sent a Sea king heli which decided to land on the skeer after circling us for a while. Whatever it was in the water then let off a flare or smoke device but the heli didnt go over or the inflatable that turned up later, just wondering if anyone had any info on what it was. By the way them pilots are bloody clever the way they handle them things!

Same here. Always nice to meet folks.

Its perhaps for the best that I didn't win. I would have had to cut at least 5 feet off any of those rods to get them in the boat :D:D

1 lad did but he wasn't fishing the open. He pulled in a 4+lber and said he was gettin some cracking bites that he missed. I was fishing the shore opposite him and couldn't work out how he had got on till i saw his little rubber dinghy!

:D bet that had a few tongues waggin is it in the rules you can't use a dinghy to get to your chosen mark hahahaha might fish one of the farne islands in the next open :D:p

According to my SO it was a big bundle of helium balloons that had broken free from somewhere. Don't know what the smoke device could have been unless it was 131 dropping an orange smoke cannister and there was some delay in it firing. They usually take a few seconds to go off (gives you enough time to throw the thing before it ignites)

The first respondent thought it may have been a kite surfer in difficculty

Cheers red5, it did look like balloons but there was something floating along behind it and i think that was what caused the doubt. The Sea king made a few passes above the area and checked us all out before landing on the skeer, they must have been satisfied cos they didnt return to the area that had been smoked. Good to hear all was well.
