Whelks for bait?

I acquired about 30 odd decent sized whelks yesterday and thought that if I delicately removed their shell with a mash hammer then they might make use as bait.

Anyone got any experience using them?

a good substitute for crab in the winter mixed with mussel,squid bluey or any of the worm baits use the soft tail piece. davy.
 
Davey is right a good winter bait if you can get them.
May work on the boat in the summer but doubt it will worm from the shore in summer.

I thought that might be the case, I'll keep 'em frozen until the weather warms up a bit. Cheers lads.
 
never used them with rod and reel. but we used to do well with them on long lines. :)
once they where wrapped on the hook, they wernet coming off without a fight either! :o
