When does the cod bugger off?

Alright everyone.

I'm still a bit new to fishing. Only been at it about 8-9 month and I've been wondering how long I've got to beat my PB cod. (2.5lb) I caught that one end of sept and I've only had whitey and flatties since. My first bairn was born on Monday so I won't be out as much so how long have I got left.

A couple of the lads I fish with have had the odd one out but nothing big yet. I'd be owa the moon to see one of us land a piggie.

Congrats on the bairn and thanks fir asking the question.
I was wondering as well. Only been at this for a matter of weeks and yet to land coddling.

Thanks a lot lads. I can't wait wait to take Jacob fishing.

I hope I get another cod soon. I went to marsden last night to try and get away from the whitey and have the chance of a cod. Ended up pulling small whitey in while coddie was coming off the ratty where I've been the last few goes. Typical.

congrats on the nipper if we have a good year i,ve seen canny fish caught as late as march but i would say febuary then that is it till the spring run of fish which sometimes does,nt happen anymore all weather permitting we do,nt seem to have had a proper winter yet

differs every year but this month is a good month for doubles if all goes well, mid to late feb and its usually crap, atb plum

It usually gets harder to find them around the end of January, travelling up north improves your chances. This year, who knows? with the mild weather and tidal surges etc, they might hang round longer or bugger off sooner.

Last year they seemed to clear off really early - I remember a lot of club results where everybody was blanking and through till the end of february you were lucky to scratch out a size fish. Yet just a year or two earlier I was having some great sessions at the Ice House in the Tyne getting bags of 12 - 15 fish at a time, in late march, when they'd cleared off from the open shore.

Generally I wind down fishing for codlings late feb - mid march; then, depending on the weather, they'll be back on the open shore anytime from late may / early june, when the crab are peeling. Fishing can be great during the summer for red cod from the weeds, with best results coming from up the coast north of Amble…Howick, Craster, Newton, Beadnell & Seahouses being some of my favourite shots. Flat seas and sunny days are the order of business for good summer fishing. August / september is the crossover between the last of the summer fishing and the start of the winter - good seas in september will see the likes of Whitley beach usually throwing up lots of fish.

So for me the cod season runs from may through till late feb / march - with the intervening couple of months being used to stock up on crab when they start to peel & otherwise having a bit of a rest:)

Gary :)

Mate the sea and fish will always be there but you can never get back the missed days with your kids . Trust me i know .

Cheers for all the replies about the bairn lads.

It's took me over 3 month but I finally got one out last night. Nowt special, just under 2lb. But it'll do me. I seen a lad fishing next to me pull a 6lber out as well. What a fish that was.

I've still got time for one or 2 more before it's over. I'm going to try and float fish for pollack over the summer. Should make a nice change.

Well done on the cod

My best, and favourite, catch of last summer was a 1.5lb pollock caught with a float
