With the rain I'd skip the area's around river mouths including harbours and piers. The freshwater will drive the fish away from them. Rocks or beach marks I'd say. From where you are I'd say Lynemouth, Druridge etc to the north or S/Sluice area for the south of you.

well i fished lynemouth last night with my mate 6-10.30pm with rag and lug. i cod 1 codling about 2.5 lbs my mate got 5 flounders (only 1 size) 7 coalies(all undersize) a tiny codling and rockling and a nice bass about 1.5lbs. not huge fish but plenty of them!! all fish taken on small hooks on 2 hook flapper rigs. cast no further than 40-50yards. i was casting further out and only got one, my mate fished dead close in and got 14!!

distance is't everthing.
I fished behind the kings at seaton sluice on tuesday and was chuckin as far as i could. Got a belta birds nest which stopped my rig in mid air and brought it back to me landing about 10 yards in front of my feet. by the time i sorted the reel out i had my first winter codling of about 1.5 pound!!!!

you know, the only time you have to cast a long way is when you are fishing a slight sloping storm beach for cod, or any other deep water fish that will not normally come inshore if there is only two foot of water, the rest of the time there is no need for distance casting, eg when you are fishing the rock edges you are aiming for the holes not the exposed rocks one hundred meters further out [aiming being much more important than distance] and why o why do people insist on penduling casting from the piers and breakwaters,you are in deep water, cast it 10 meters you have as much chance as the bloke who is trying to show off with his big casts,and thats really what it all about ,a good sea sea angler knows when he has to hit a distance[ not often ] and when he has to place that bait just almost on the fishes head.

Nice comments Paul, I for have one never been able to hit Norway,
but have still managed to bag a few nice fishies like you say dont worry aboot distance use ya heed not ya muscle
