which is the best allround bait

generally when fishing the winter season for cod from october to the back end of april ,what bait would you use if you could only use one type of bait, rag ,squid, lug ,razor clam ect, and don,t everyone say peeler, i've seen squid outfish crab on certain nights, i am just trying to find out which of all the different types of baits that are available to us is the all round best general bait.

Lug tipped off with a nice bit of juicy squid, preferably the tentacles on a two hook flapper, very appealing to cod, another decent bait is razor fish and dont ignore the cheap but excellent mussel

it would have to be mussel for me... it catches everywhere... beach, rocks, and rivers, can be used fresh, frozen and even smelly....before the frosts come
to me a very underated bait and readily available to most either free or a small cost..

Best winter bait? A bacon sandwich. For the fish, would have to be lugworm. Don't leave home without it!
