Which Photo Editing Software?

I've just moved up to a DSLR and I'm wanting to know what photo editing software others use and what is the best for a keen amateur like myself who wants an easy to use package that gives great results without spending several hundred £'s?

if you are using jpg the easy one to use is photo impression the basic one is free if you shoot in raw file go with your camera disc the photo impression has got basic pictures that you can put faces on .- edit -it is simple to use

I use photoshop and host on photobucket - but both are paid for. There's the obvious naughty option for the software of course.

I use photoshop CS3, but having always been a Mac user (always been the industry standard for photographers) their i-photo which comes as part of your standard OS is also very good, often it's all I need. I don't know if it's available to download & run on PC's. Guess it depends how "creative" you want to be with your images as to what sort of set-up you'd need.

no iPhoto for PC's mac only, and it's pretty amazing really what it manages to do with very few buttons - my other half loves the starighten horizon tool as she can't take a straight photo to save her life

CS2 Photoshop on the pc will do everything you need... unless... you want to shoot in RAW format. can be a lot of issues with colour correcting the images, thats if you can get RAW to open at all

CS3 will open raw automatically

think I've still got a copy of photoshop CS2 sat on my server if you want a link to it

I've got Macromedia Fireworks 8 if that's any good to you Rob. I dunno what it's like, haven't got a clue how to use it as I use Irfanview for the simple stuff I need.

Great photos Sless!

Try PhotoScape before you buy anything.
It's easy to use, handles batches of photos and best of all is free to download a fully-functioning version.

Thanks for all the replies and help lads. I have downloaded several versions of free photo editing software (Irfanview, Photoscape, GIMP2, Paint.NET and Photos Pos Pro) and also have cs2 on loan to try that as well. I'll be having a bit play with them all to see which has the features I need and is also user friendly.

I bought a Sony A500 Sless, logical move for me as I already had compatible Minolta AF lenses. Thats a big zoom mate (240mm-800mm on a digital camera), did you manage the photos of the jay without a tripod? I had a Sigma APO 400mm f5.6 on a Nikon F90 and couldn't handhold steady shots if my life had depended on it, but that didn't have the optical stabiliser function like yours does.
