which rough ground reel?

i currently have a 535 mag for the rough.
ideal for me as i like 35lb sensor and the reel is big enough to hold enough line for a half decent cast.

am after a second rock reel with if not better cranking ability - big enough to hold enough 35lb sensor.

is the one up from the saltist 30 only for boats??

and which penn torque reels are the better ones?? is it the trq 100 theres that many of them on the penn website.

any info appreciated. all the best

You wont get enough 35lb sensor on a penn torque 100 as for the bigger ones never used one so cant coment on them maybe go for another 535 mag

which penn torque 100 you on about nicky mate is it the one with the slideys mag on the side. seen one on the net looks a belter for 30 sensor

i have just sold one of my gold penn trq 100 as they dont hold enough heavy line i.e 30lb plus ideal for 25lb and a shocker but in the heavy stuff ya cany use a shocker the new saltist 30s look a nice reel but never used one the 535 take some beating for using heavy line but if your wanting a reel to hold 35lb line stay away from the penn trq 100 and the 200s are huge mate i have big hands but make the 535 feel like a 515 lol

nice one rocker, phil and nicky.

good anglers mean good replys:)

anyone on here know anything about the size UP from the saltist 30?

might be the reel for me when fishing short range:D

people who fish the green wall will know what am talking about:calim:

Hello,
Almost all of my fishing is done with my Saltists 20 and 30 and I love them. I have Penn 535's that I use when I need some more line, like off some of the cliff shots and I some times use an old Calcutta BSV 7000.

If you want a bigger reel than the Penn 535 then have a look at the penn 545...the next size up, Penn 545 GS — Weymouth Angling Centre.

Or you could Have a look at the Torium 14 or 16 Shimano Torium 16 6,2:1 16lb-450yd | Shimano Multipliers (Star Drag) | Shimano Fishing Tackle | Fishing Tackle Companies | Summerlands Fishing Tackle | Summerlands Tackle

There's also a Saltist 40, I have the levelwind version that I use with braid on the Boat for shadding.

Remember though that the bigger reels have a higher "bridge" making it harder to get your thumb over the spool, ok if you have big hands and don't want to power cast.

Just a few ideas.

Regards Ian

Great post Ian.
I've got an Abu 9000c two speed loaded with 40lb mono for a couple of short range rough marks I fish, and must admit I've been tempted to retire it in favor of the Penn 545 GS.
Money is right for this reel as well as its going to have a hard life,
Especially on the green wall.

Thanks Rocker, I've a couple of Penn 535's that I've modified by lowering the reel seat. I'll post a couple of pics if anyones interested.
I'm an engineer and when I had my lathe I spent a lot of time playing around with reels...some good mods and some bad haha.

go for another 535 - but you can get lower(4.25:1) gears supplied by penn, giving more cranking power. i've used this and a newell for years and had success at marks like lochaline!

For years I used slosh reels for fishing rough ground with 40lb line.
They would last a couple of years then ready for the bin.
4 years ago I got the saltist 30 for fishing the rough ground. Over night all my sloshes we're gone and I got a few saltist, they are twice the price of a slosh but they are twice the price for a reason.
The one I got 4 years ago looks battered but it still runs smooth and is still working and I have never opened it up.
Once you have a saltist you won't use a slosh again.

Bigfoot.

Abu 9000c? If your hands are big enough!

still use my 9000,used it on the beach ,rock edges .cliff tops, piers.tope fishing and wreck fishing brilliant reel even today would,nt mind a 1000 mind you.

shv 30 another good alrounder for lines to about 25lb breaking strain excellant casting reel as well,

excellent info lads:)

had a look on the web and i like the look of the new black gold saltists.

the 35 model not obviously as big as the 40, holds that bit extra line and can cast.

am sure the price will make up for all the rigs i would loose from a cheaper reel:p
