Whitby\'s east pier.

Just copied and pasted this off another forum. Some of you guys may wish to send an email or 2.

With regard to The east pier bridge my understanding of the situation is that Scarborough borough Council have no intention to do anything whatsoever about it. It is not on the agenda this side of 2010 to even be discussed so at the rate things progress I think itll be 10 years plus before u see a bridge there. This is discusting as SBC have just spent 30 million on the marine drive sea defence which wasnt even required.

If you like me feel this to be a pain in the r\'s why not drop The Whitby Mayor and scarborough councillour Robert Broadley a line at the council email address below. He keeps telling me he is behind sea angling so lets see if he is prepared to help us.

Which forum mate? I\'d heard that they were going to repair it before then, the same company that did the Marine Drive works were going to do it.
MikeR or Ollie might know more about it. Shame if it\'s true though, a good mark the East Pier.

Hi mate cleveland sea anglers the wall I got it off.

I have been in touch with a councillour (didnt have to go much further than my kitchen to be honest). His words were as far as he is aware there is no current plan, no funding has been applied for and no work has been comissioned. In short m8 it is pretty much as described above - The east pier will not be reopening in the near future, unless you apply some pressure that is.

Scarborough council are currently reviewing what sea defense work is required a Whitby and I have been informed that it is likely to involve rock armour around the base of the east pier. I was informed that if the government is going to give then money to do this then they will also have to replace the bridge. Just what I\'ve heard, but it was from someone who works on the defenses. I also heard something similar from a second source.

I have tried to get answers out of SBC a few times about the replacement of the gantry between the pier and the extension without any real success, it seems that they SBC are not really that interested in replacing it in the near future for the simple reason its not worth it to them. Its not deprimental to the town not having the bridge, the holiday trade is not suffering so why should they bother.
On a personal note, I used to love fishing off the east extension, it was the place I caught my first ever codling and my first ever double figure fish.
So for me it would be a godsend if it were put right, but I think by the time it does get repaired I will have hung my rods up and retired from the sport I love.
Its a real shame that something cannot be done, there are a lot of new up and coming anglers that have never (and may never) experienced fishing of one of the best pier shots in the northeast.
Any pressure we can put on SBC is welcome by me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I\'ve emailed the mayor, and below is part of an email I had from Scarborough Council in 2002 just after the bridge was removed:

\"It is hoped that as part of the next phase of the Whitby Coastal
Defence scheme monies will be made available to construct a new
footbridge and this will require approval by DEFRA who are the
Government Department grant aiding these type of works.

I do not forsee a replacement bridge within the next two years and it may be as long as five years before access is restored to the extension.\"

Not really Scarborough\'s money that\'ll be used to replace it anyway! ;)

i was told by sbc that it would start work in 2006 on the repair ,ive just looked on the world sea fishing site and a fella called stu also wrote to them and his reply was the same ,

If sbc told you 2006 then unfortunately they lied m8. Like TAla says it is off the radar. They havent even applied for the money nevermind given a start date. Thats what you get from SBC lip service to keep you quiet. It\'s been shut too long as it is.

I recieved this e-mail from them in the know.
Mr Halliday

I have passed your query onto Mr Neil Corrie, Group Engineer, and he has
furnished me with the following response which I trust will answer your query.

I refer to your recent email to the Council\'s Customer First regarding the link
bridge between the East Pier and the eastern breakwater at Whitby Harbour.

The link bridge was originally removed in 2001 on Health & Safety grounds
following the displacement of the foundation support due to severe wave action
and subsequent movement of the bridge itself, making access unsafe for
pedestrians.

Due to the estimated high cost, for which the Borough Council does not have the
available funds, it will not be possible to replace this access bridge unless
external funding is forthcoming from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs). In order to secure such funding, the Borough Council is
required to apply to Defra through a prescribed process which is undertaken
following the preparation of a coastal defence strategy.

The Whitby Coastal Defence Strategy, which recommended capital works to the
Whitby piers, was completed in July 2002. However, the prioritisation for these
works was not sufficient to enable Defra to support the recommended scheme,
including the replacement of the link bridge, to be implemented as quickly as we
all would wish.

Despite this disappointment, the Borough Council has continued to pursue these
projects with Defra and as a result further detailed studies and investigations
are now being procured to help secure the funding required. These studies, which
we hope will assist in securing a higher priority for the projects, will be
grant aided by Defra. Tenders have recently been received for the further
studies and it is envisaged that these will commence early in 2006 subject to
approval and funding from Defra.

I share your frustration about the temporary loss of access bridge but I trust
that you will be assured of the Council\'s best endeavours in trying to have it
reinstated as soon is possible.

Regards

At least you got a reply tala and it does sound a nice letter on the surface. Given that Scarborough is again at the forefront of coastal protection issues (ie the new sea defences at the sea life centre) I feel the reply to be lip service. What did you think to the reply ?

Dear Rob,
Report going to Cabinet in March to get approval to contract a consultant to do some investigations into piers at Whitby, subject to Defra funding. This will include the need to re establish access as part of any recommendations arising.I can\'t be sure of when the work would begin but it\'s definitely one the objectives and I will endeavour to update Members asap.

Rob,
Agree with you ,and if all else fails ,we may have to make a bid for our own capital to provide a new bridge, but let\'s hope the study gets the go ahead from Defra asap.

You neva know lads you may get the chance of fishing one of the best (if not the best) fishing spots in the north east.
So wat do you say people, it will only take u a second. PLEEEEEEEEZZZZEEE.

TALA. :D

Caught my first codling off that pier back in \'96. Lost more tackle off it than caught fish if i remember rightly ;). It\'d be a shame if they dont reopen the extension, espacially as you\'ve now got decent access to the main pier at high water.

I\'ve done my bit. Good luck chaps!
