Why do you fish?

Strange question eh, someone asked me that last week.
its not the catching thats for sure. For me, Its the peace and tranquility, standing on the edge of the ocean, watching the moon ripple on the sea like last night, wondering where all the shooting stars come from..waiting and watching, wondering if that next bump bump is going to be the one youve waited for.
mind you, anyone whos seen me fling my stand and boot my box over will wonder what I mean by tranquility, but it doesnt last long.I calm down very quickly.
So..
what makes YOU fish?

used to do it years ago as a kid and decided at the begining of this year to take it up again,my first trip out saw me at st marys with a carp rod and a 3oz weight lol ,quick nip up to temples and back down with a pier rod and cheap reel, never looked back ,as you say paul its not the catching ,you cant wack sitting on the river blyth with a cuppa coffee watching what goes on around you, besides if you had my kids youd wanna get out a couple of days a week, then theres the crack when you get chatting to some ald fella whos been fishing for 50 odd years and he gets to telling you how it used to be and you get to dreaming of that double figure cod ,when the rod bends lol and your praying all the way in that its a biggun only to find a bunch of seaweed ,kicked me box many a time lol ,great fun ;)

Fully agree Bri. Once I get the time to actually get out fishing, like everyone else, I hope to get the big one !. I havent managed to do that up until now but I keep hoping that it will come one day. Getting a decent fish isnt the be-all-and-end-all of it though. Its just great to see the rod tip jumping about and even when its an undersized whiting or whatever, the excitement and anticipation of what might be on the end of the line is just brilliant. Its also the peace and quiet of being away from work and doing something that I want to do. I remember my first fish that I ever caught and it was caught off the \"black path\" between Camels Island and Frenchmans Bay at South Shields. It was undersized and I caiught it on an old Edgar Sealey rod and reel. I am must have been around 12 years old at the time and the feeling was out of this world. I can still remember that fish and I still have the same love of the sport now as I had way back then. It cannot be beaten !

Cheers.

\" It\'s not the catching that\'s for sure\"

I remember talking to someone on Blyth pier quite a few years ago and it went like this.
\"Jim you should have been on here one night it was fantastic, a fish every cast, you couldn\'t miss, didn\'t matter what bait you were using\". That would not be my idea of fishing. If that is how it was I would have stopped years ago.
I must admit that it is nice to have a good night occasionally or to hear of someone on here having a good night. It does give me a sense of excitement even reading a post on here about a good catch, sort of sets you up for your next session.
As previously said just being out there is what it\'s about. Not really a one for box kicking lol but I can remember one night fishing on the north side of King Edwards bay S**t hill I think and after losing two fish in two chucks (the first one was the biggest fish I have been hooked into) I nearly threw my rod and reel into the sea. It was time to go home. I just shrug now and wonder what may have been.

:D :D first time hubby took me fishing over a Cambois on the Old Seven Stars jetty..I thought I was the bees knees catching little poddlers..only to find out later that they grew big...lol.lol.lol. the sweet joy of innocence eh!!! put on my first rag-worm that day and was physically sick but carried on with baiting the hook..still love to see a nice bait going on the hook 10 years down the line...Had some cracking nights on the beach when you have a clear sky.. shooting stars and meteor showers bloody brilliant..bet you all make a wish when you see a shooting star..Eh!!! Big fish..big fish.. :D :D

I havnt been fishing long compared to sum ppl but i love fishing just as much as everyother fisherman. I fish becoz i enjoy hanging out with me m8s and meeting new ppl and just generally having a good laugh.Everytime i catch a fish i get excited, it just makes me want to catch another one, which makes me fish the week after that or anychance i get really

As well as enjoying the company of the people I fish with, there is probably a lot of the hunter/gatherer instinct going on (possibly reflected in the fact that I\'ve just ordered my first air weapon today!). :D

:( and i hope your not going to be doing what I think your thinking about???? eh!!....love duck though !! and rabbit !! lol.lollol.

For me it\'s time out,I have a sh1t job.. I feel as if I worka 100 hours a week (more like 60) or more,I dont earn a lot of cash, but it just about keeps me, then on the odd night/day I can buy a £5.00 worth of bait and spend 6,7,10 hours on the beach, just standing there, watching the world go by,,If I catch it\'s brill, if I don\'t its a canny night out, a few good mates, a flask of tea & a bag of rag/ lug ect what more do you need in life?? (appart from the lottery comming up) ... I sure we have all seen things the \'\'normal\'\' person has not seen, shooting stars by the dozen, just watching aeroplanes in the dark cloud,or thick mist remindes me of the close encounter film loads of lights& things,, the odd knackerd bird resting on your rod tip, even just watching the sun come upat 4.30 on a Tuesday morning ,,, I once saw the northern lights over S.T Marys Lighthouse, ,,..Then thers getting back to the pub after a good session,& afew well earned pints, the locals kicking up a stink about the smell of fish in the bar, but they dont say no to a fresh fish or two for their supper,, I just guess I love it,,,, :D Cheers Tich :D :D :D ........

Here Here lets have more of the same. We can all argue among our selves from time to time but the person that dissagrees with these posts is not a fisherman.
Whether it\'s the excitement of the anticipated catch or the complaints of the smell of the fish in the bar we all have our own reasons.

Jim.

Sometimes I have to sit down and ask myself WHY? Why am I here when I could be elsewhere, why am I spending this here when I could be spending it on something / someone else. Why am I cold when I could be warm. The words of a long time fishing partner, ring loudly in my head (not least because he screams them every 4 minutes whenever we\'re out!) WE MUST BE FUCKING BARMY. Apart from that I just love everything about it.

Ive been fishing for the last two years and each time I go out the anticipation is the same ,the adrenaline rush when your rod tip starts dancing the pitting your witts against ellements in the hope of catching the fish of a life time and at the end of the night when youve blanked again !!! the feeling of pished offness and the wanting to throw everything in the water and never go out again !!!only to wake up the following day and think* wonder where will fish today* and *wonder what the seas like* :D so why do I go fishing ...coz the tellys usually crap and my lass wants me to cut down on how much I drink lol!!!

Me personally, I just love everything about it.
The peace and quite away from the wife and kids is a nice bonus, a good chinwag with whoever else is on the beach having a chuck.
The anticipation has got to be one of the biggest draws for me, just waiting and wondering what is going to make the rod tip bounce wether it be a tiny rockling or a double figure cod i just love seeing them come to the shore.
As a fisherman that cannot stand the taste of fish I get the added bonus of seeing peoples faces when I\'m putting 4-5lb cod back in the water (some look horrified).
Dont get me wrong I will take the first fish over 3lb home for the wife but after that they all go back.
And yes Black V I do say \"I wish for a fish\" everytime I see a shooting star.
Im a geezer that needs to be out there wetting a line, fishing has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember,I just hope I can carry on for the rest of my life.
God I can babble on.... SORRY GUY\'S AND GALS

What makes me fish is getting up every morning or night and getting ready to fish. The packing of my gear and putting me suit on and then getting driven to different spots are exciting all to wet the lines. The water in almost unpridictable because you dont no whats under the water, what fish you are going to catch and how mant you are go to catch. Each seesion is a differnet challange AND i LOVE it! it\'s relaxing and makes me feel as if i am in the right place enjoying every second every minute and every hour of FISHING!

Started fishing when I was a young\'un,my family came from North Blyth and my dad used to take me over there alot to fish,I always insisted on going on the ferry so we had to walk about two miles to the Link End lol,he never complained, well not to me anyway. He was brought up at the Link End in fact he was born next door to the Severn Stars,can\'t remember it been open but I can remember it being there...............................As I got older found out about the demon drink and music and women and my fishing got kicked into touch.......I took my son around the places where my dad took me and he showed an interest in fishing,so probably the last six years or so i have been fishing again for real,he prefes the summer Mackerel fishing and our trips to the Mull but he still turns out in the winter..........last winter we were fishing in a blizzard on Blyth pier with a plastic sheet, which was our wind breaker, wrapped around us,my wife was ringing me to tell me some of the roads were blocked with snow and she thought we should come home,could\'nt hear the phone ringing for the wind lol, when we got home she said where the #### have you been I\'ve been worried sick, the bairn said fishing look at all the fish we caught, his hands were blue and he was crying when his toes and hands started warming up,he got up the next morning and I was expecting him to say that was enough he was chucking it but no he said can we go again tonight.........So Paul I dunno why we fish lol.My wife thinks we are stupid but we\'ve had some good laughs and seen some unusual things and met some great people...........I used to always think this time where going to have a great session, theres been some great reports of fish being caught etc,don\'t bother now catching a fish is a bonus now.

:) so your folks were from North Blyth Alan. wellyou will remember this then The Seven Stars...my fist fishing place..lol.lol.lo there willbe a few others remember it as well :D

Excellent question, Paul.

I think, as far as those who DO fish goes, we\'d agree with all the responses above. I don\'t think WE need to explain anything to each other.....we all experience similar feelings / emotions when fishing.

However......trying to explain those feelings / emotions to a non-angler, is a different and far more difficult task......lol

My mother grew up there she lived at Bolckows my grandparents were the caretakers and my dad at the Link End,I\'ve lived on the other side all my life !
Never seen many coloured photos of the Severn Stars, where did you get it from ? can\'t read the writing properly at the bottom but i think its the lad that runs Blyth History society, could be wrong. He does some really good Digitally enhanced photos.
Used to have a photo of them getting knocked down but I\'ve lost that now,
