Weally..sorry... Really pee'd off with these westerlies that seem to have been blowing almost constantly since the new year. Looking at the forecast it seems they are here for the week ahead as well. Apparently it is the most prolonged spell of westerlies since 1974 (www.theweatheroutlook.com). Even Sam Harriss is quoting it as the worst season he can remember for 60 years. (you tackle dealers must not be paying him enough money to falsify reports). ;). It's a shame 'cos there have been fish when the sea has lifted. But personally would say it's the least I've been out over winter for years.

I can offer a firm and cast iron guarantee, that as soon as the clocks go back and all the fish have moved osffshore and its time to dust off the boat rods that the wind will duly oblige and turn around to the east till probably october.

there will of course be a small gap in this at some point when there will be no winf at all and the sea will be flat calm. This I guaranteee will happen when I take the boat out of the water for a spruce up. soon as ts back in the water the easterlies will prevail once more

if this wind doesnt turn to the east or north i will crack up i cant remember the last time i spent so long in the house .cabin fever is kicking in and ,not that im complaining about it too much but i think kronenbourg should send me a christmas card next year :D :D i have even put a bait in the goldfish bowl and guess what i blanked again :D :D :D lol

Put a stick blender into the goldfish bowl to get a bit sea running!

John....

Are you a newspaper headline writer by any chance...lol......such use of alliteration ;)

"..... worst season he can remember for 60 years. "..............taking into account pechant for detail, factual info and memory I'm saying nowt.......lol

Can anybody explain why winds from the cause the sea to be flat?

Is it because the wind drives the sea back or something like that?

Steve

We just got back from doggy walking on the beach and there's a sea running today and the wind was NW, nothing at hand to take a pic with tho

It depends on which way it's blowing Steve

If the wind's coming from the NE / E it has a has a big body of water to act on and the waves get time to build before hitting the shore if it's from the west this can't happen! If you're on the SW coast winds from the SW cause big seas. The biggest surf on the planet happens on Hawaii because it's slap bang in the middle of the Pacific and the winds have time and space to buid huge waves before they hit land (from any direction)

I think that's how it works?

Err that's how the waves get big! I'm sure offshore winds have little effect on flattening water.
