Seeing all these FS Reels for sale, wondering weather to give it a go this year or not.
Love my Multis to be honest and I can't see any obvious reasons to change. But listening to a few lads, they do narf make it sound tempting !

I took the leap 4 or 5 seasons ago and now they're all I use, I wouldn't go back now. It wasn't a smooth transition for me at first and I wasted money on some crap reels too, bit trial and error but for sure it's been for the best.

Lots of perks but for me the biggest is no faffing about with birds nests etc on a freezing cold night.

I still use multis on the boat and from shore if fishing off a big cliff. Thought it was a load of bollocks when they said don't use FS off a cliff and I learnt the hard way there too! - bent spindle shaft, had to send off for new parts.

If you're wanting to do it, I'd say go for it

Cheers Liam. Wanna save me the money, and tell me what to go for first time ??

Heard a few different things.

2nd that Liam.

2nd that Liam.

i also changed over possibly 7-8 years ago, cant fault them, for the river shots, aswell as of the rock edges, were i mostly fish.even the bays up at marsden, never had any problems, bar a couple of wind knots.
just make sure you use 1 of them{finger things},forgot there names.LOL.:).

For sheer winching power over rough ground and kelp, the Penns are great – surfblaster and spinfisher reels feel like they could pull in a car engine.
I don’t know about the recent upgraded Surfblaster II – I’m assuming its good, but I’ve never used it.

For me though, Shimano is the way to go overall with the Ultegra range for mid-priced reels (£100-£200)

Perfection line lay which translates into longer casts too. Anything 7000 size downwards the Ultegras are the tops for me and theres nothing wrong with the 8000s+ either – just if youre targeting big fish over really rough ground the Penn’s power will rip through the kelp more easily.

Like Reg says, I lost some expensive braid too when I first started off by not making sure the line was tight when spooling braid – that’s a must or you’ll get those wind knots which are basically game over for your braid.
Personally I never got the hang of the FS canon Reg mentions, so I just use a glove when chucking out heavy ended braid. You’ll need at least a thick glove if chucking out 6ozs with braid mind as if that catches your finger – its off!

So in conclusion, if you can afford it look for the Ultegras in my opinion.
I have a spare FS canon you can have for free if you like (I’m in Peterlee) and I was considering selling one of my Ultegra XSC10000s too as I’ve upgraded to one of the more expensive Shimaos. If you’re looking at that model mentioned let me know and I’ll do you a good price.

another great reply Liam.ps,sorry i {didint} mention the FS canon gaget, like yourself got a couple of different types @ also cant get away with them.i ALSO,just use a 1 finger clove {thingy}lol..fingers up.:).

If fishing heavy ground go for the metal bodied penns,if using a leader go for 80 lb braid, mono will give you unexplained crack offs and ring wraps.Experiment with longer baitclips or similar as usually bait will release from clip in mid air.Plenty more tips other lads will give.A bite from a Tommy will be like a five pound cod as no stretch.
