Wor Lass 19/6 A Mad Half Hour

Too much sunshine versus too much to do at work; what to do? Answer leave the visitors behind and get a couple of hours afloat this evening.

First drop onto a wreck caught nothing but the wreck losing the first and only set of gear of the night. Next stop the rough ground by St Mary’s can, to drift at a fast pace pushed north by tide and wind. Nothing again. OK what next?

Move inshore a long way and drift over the drop-offs. Right move, what a drift! First fish comes in, a little tommy, no blanking tonight. :)

Over the next half hour around about low water, the fishing was hectic. Nothing big came in with fish ranging from half a pound up to the best of the night at about 4lb but they came within seconds on every drop. All good things come to an end and when it eventually went quiet I headed back round to cover the same drift but the fish had gone. That was pretty much it for the night.

The water was gin clear, and I could see the fish within the first half dozen turns of the reel. I used some small, home-made lures, purple and silver lure-flash lashed to a 4/0 hook and they couldn’t get enough of them. Just gently lifted a rod’s length off the bottom and back down again. They’ll be a challenge to fish with when the mackerel eventually turn up, until then I can make the most of it.

Champion Kevin,

Last time at the can we were well inshore as well to hit the fish, the kayak lads were a lot further off than we were!

Graham.

The kayak lads were well offshore on Wed too, fishing north of the can then next to it, while I was halfway between them and the shore. An unusual turnaround.
