i think fishing within the 10 miles or even 6 mile zone is 90% satisfying and gets the fish and fun and safety mix right.....
however...most of us have this adventurer--hunter--risk taker gene and will not rest until the adrenalin kicks in.
i know me well and have to hold me back not to go that far out on my 18 footer, single outboard...
my remedy: I was twice out this year 35 miles off Cape Point...next land Antarctica---with a 27 footer and twin 115HP outboards
i also booked JFK TWO to bring us to the graveyard in a few weeks time...good chance to come back and also good chance to find the good wrecks.

Most of us take out our boat insurance to cover coastal waters UK & Europe so it may be prudent to check the insurance "small print" regarding the offshore limits relating to coastal waters. Many insurance companies have a 12 mile from shore clause which means a trip to the graveyard could be at your own risk.

Can't wait to hear about your Graveyard trip Norbert. You do the reconnaissance next month, so that when Lynn and I join you for your July trip, you will know all the hotspots!

I have 40miles from point of land so well covered, but to get this there were many stipulations. One of the main points being is if anything does happen and you are rescued and they leave the boat you will get paid out from the insurance. As the insurance will take the rescue services report as to where you were and if you are not covered then they wont pay out! and that could be a lot of cash for most of us.

There are probably less than a dozen wrecks within 5 miles of Amble , if the fish are on them I don't travel any further, I don't get any more pleasure catching fish at 12 miles out than I do at 5 , but I do like to catch fish, so if that means picking my way through the wrecks till I find the fish and it takes me 12 miles out before I do, that's where you'll find me.

VHF could be as good as useless 40miles out and trying to reach the coastguard, if your lucky there maybe a boat within 10 miles that might pick of a signal.
the boats that stick their antenna at a rakish angle so they look good always make me smile. makes them all but useless beyond a few miles
in a smaller boat - a proper passage plan written out and stick to it and folks on shore having a copy.
I always like a paper chart around as well. something both comforting about seeing yourself on a big piece of paper relative to land and at the same time it keeps you very aware and focused of just where you are in relation to help if its needed, and tends to dampen any bravado to just 'try a bit further out' Log your position regularly on paper
I'd add a decent fire extinguisher above what you normally carry to seans list - probably two of them
and I would put a life raft above all the extra electronics beyond a backup radio which everyone should have anyway
