Well every season i like to have something new to try, anything from a new rod or reel down to a simple rig or lure but this year i have been very tempted to purchse one of the underwater camera's.

Mainly to view inshore water down to 40ft and drop over the side on its cable/rope when mackerel fishing, seems to be a few on the market our days...uestion is has anyone tried them and with the colour of our water would it be worth it you think.?

Some fantastic videos of Norway and Tuna fishing with cameras just under the surface but our coast is none of the above.

It'll give you a good excuse to jump off the back of stingray again Richy , get a different perspective of you in the water , and think of the shots you'll be able to get if one of those big porgies comes to have a look ;) :D

he could film the stern as Stingray took off into the distance

I tell you what it may of been a hot sunny day but 8 miles out at sea in the north sea water and it soon makes you get back out after a little swim around and dive under the boat :)

Still usure with the camera, wanting one i can drop over the side and feeds a picture back to a screen, idea being you can sea mackerel swimming, kelp moving etc.

Thought about trying a cheap underwater video, two things to sort out though, as you say it would be nice to view a feed so you can see what your getting or not getting, and the stability issue. If it moves all over the footage would hardly be worth having, the only way around this would be on the end of a telescopic pole like a washing line pole. Would make good footage if video was taken in the boat and cut together with underwater footage of the fish coming to surface. As the price of the cameras come down it will become more viable in the future.

Funny coincidence. I have just bought myself a GoPro Hero with the underater lens addition to do the same thing when boatfishing and lobster diving in Cape Town.

I think there is a lot to gain from it here in the North East as well. Not only can you scan the swarms of mackerel, I think more importantly you can check the visibility at ground level. You can see the orientation and nature of wrecks and possibly even where the fish stand.

That is the main reason it has put me off, i am unsure how much you would see say below 20ft fown, i know when i went diving in the northeast after loads of flat seas you could not see 20ft in front of you, loads of video's on utube but all in the med with water you could drink it was so clear.

I think the clarity will be fine, if you stay far away from the rivers or far enough out. Shads catch the best offshore and in deep water

When i was in Sunderland marina, the lad 2 boats along had a Gopro, it had to be put in a little plastic case before lowering it into the water. He did this and attached it to the end of a broomshank and put it under my M/Fisher, the water was clear and it showed a lot of weed on the hull and my prop anode missing. I couldnt view it on the camera but he emailed me the video, but i cant find it at the minute....:)

iv got a go pro hero 2 totally water proof up to 60m if I remember right. but u need to buy a dive case for the lense to focus. get one for bout 220 with mounts off amazon

Well not purchsed a camera but i do need a new flare and smoke kit, just checked mine and they went out of Date in Oct 2012 so that is one thing i can buy but i hope i dont get to play with them next year :)
