2013...

Great stuff lads I had looked into doing this a while back now and managed to find a supplyer of the liquids and hardners etc that you need to make your own here is the link if its any good to you
Liquid Plastic

Aye Deano, thats the one ...... It's great fun but much enhanced by the fact that it's sooo hard to get it "just right" ..... I've burned loads of plastics and other materials and had the garage like old london town in the smog ..... (Tony the cook comes in very handy when a pan is needed) the satisfaction and end result when you get a good cast is worth the work.
Chris, for cost I think maybe the material itself is cheaper than buying shads (or could be in a years time when we perfect it :) ) as long as you don't burn it or waste it, but at this point in time I'm many many pounds down due to mould material and some (a large :) ) amount of failed stuff, but that's not what it's about, cost is immeterial, it's the pleasure of success (cant wait for the first fish :) )
The story all started about 3 weeks ago when a new lad at the marina (Chris) with a similar boat to slinky (like kevins 645) said hello, we got talking and he showed me and gave me one of his flatty lures ............................ I knew as soon as I seen ........ the stage was set :0) ... many thanks Chris... :)

It's hard work..... certainly not as flash as a bought shad .....and is a lot easier to cast with two pair of hands (thanks tone) but sheer heaven when it comes out the mould as a good-un.
Still lots of problems to get over but we're getting there .... :)
pleased yous like ..... :D

I understand that money doesnt come into it, the first fish on the home made shads will be one to be remembered :)

I think they need a name though....what about "Normads"...:D

:D:D:D crackin stuff :D:D:D

Aye I hope to break even by maybe something like after the Rio olympics ... :D

just had a quick calculation, I think I have about 20 good shads and wasted material for 6 or 8 others, all on half a litre of material at about £20/ltr
so not too bad on basics after the moulds are sorted with a shad costing around 50p plus colour, glitter, hook, weight, eyes, gas and mould life
it may even get better ... :)

I definitely should not have read this thread,, I'm itching to start moulding shads now , I spent all last winter making lead moulds , I've got hundreds of them , I just know what's going to happen :)
They looking good Norman. ;)

Norman, Tony, the secret Northumbrian laboratory’s output is looking good. Are you going for “stage two” with bells, rattles and scents added like the pike and bass anglers use?

Ray and Chris, I fly and lure fish for Pollock a lot up in the wider bits of Scotland; the shads work well but shimmer eels are even better – and cheaper. Worth a look for next season.

I've ordered some shimmer eels , I think I'll hold off buying shad making equipment though.

I just took Kev's advice and ordered some shimmer eels as well :), just need to get today out the way, then its down bank all the way to spring...:):)

slinky shad

slinky shad

Carrying on from Tony's phallic whittling .... :)

This is Tony's slinky shad sitting in the first half mould, after a bit filling and rubbing down (several coats) :)

Then with the second half box built around it ....

Then after the second half mould material and the hard glass backing ....

Finally the result ............ a 100% slinky shad .... :)
