3 Pollack from the 3 Shelves

With the water bieng so coloured coming from the rivers over the last week, pretty much ruling out lure fishing in the vicinity, I decided to head for the Leas in South Shields where I suspected that the water might be a bit clearer. I opted for the 3 shelves area as I know there are pockets of fairly deep water close in at hide tide. I arrived and the sea was perfect, slight swell with no breaking waves, but more importantly CLEAR Water!!

First I tried a range of soft plastic lures close in in the half chance of a Wrasse, had a few nibbles but nothing taking the lures. After an hour of fruitless fun I decided to change to the trusty 28g Zenith Silver minnow as I didn't fancy losing my expensive ones in the Kelp. Hey presto! 30mins on the Zenith Spinner produced 3 small Pollack! Unfortunately I had to get back home otherwise I'd still be there now. All-in-all a very satisfying 90mins, let hope for another one tonight!

The Leas

The Leas

The Leas is the stretch of grassy coastline between Souter Lighthouse (South) and Gypsies Green (North)

I have place a pin on the maps to show you the location of the mark.

Hope this helps

That mark you dropped the pin on, if am not mistaken that's the black path? Or very close to it

It's fairly close to it, the black path is about 100 yards south of the pin on the other side of the small bay, you can see the old black pipe underneath the rocks and concrete etc. There's lots of marks along the Leas and some of them are close together. Gonna try the black path next actually, cos I saw some gulls diving near the end of the pipe yesterday and have never Lure fished that mark before.

Hello Si,
I've enjoyed your recent reports, good photos too. Do you mind if I ask, is that a Century HPR that you're using?
If it is can I ask how does it handle the heavier lures. I have the short HPR and I've only had a bit of a dick about with soft lures.

Yes mate its the 9ft 5g to 28g EBT one. personally i think it performs better at the mid to top end of its range using the heavier lures. It'll blast out a patchinko2 a fair way and it handles all my hard plastics & spinners really well. It's also really good with soft plastics down to 5g, the only problem I'm finding with it is that its a tad too long for LRF style fishing really close in, unless your at a height. The shorter rod would be perfect for that.

Let me know what you think of the shorter one after you have had a chance to use it more. I'll be after a shorter lure rod next and would really appreciate your opinion on it.

Cheers

Great stuff Si,
Mine is the 7'7" EBT 5-28gram and I like it a lot so far. The problem at the minute is that every time I'm not on shift the weather has been lousy, I'm off tomorrow and the forecast is pants. I'm off to the caravan and I might take it up with me in hope!

If you want you're more than welcome to have a go with it sometime to see what you think, I fish quite a bit along "your" patch.

Regards Ian

Your gonna have to be quick. Si has let the cat out of the bag and there's going to be a run on Zenith spinners.

Is it easyish to get to these marks

It's a short walk from the main road where you can park your car or there are also bus stops. Most of the marks along there are relatively easy to access at high water. At low water they are difficult to access and climbing is normally involved. All marks along the leas are dangerous and you must pay attention to footing and be constantly aware of your surroundings. only venture down to the waters edge on calm seas.

Si
