525, not bad reel

Fished ssp the other day with wor kid who hardly ever fishes as works and lives abroad, anyway he was getting snagged up as not getting out far enough. He's using a 525 mag and orion so I asked for a chuck, got the reel set up better and gave it a whack and all I can say is that the reel is very good, smooth and fast retrieve. Also the 14ft rod suprised me, easy to load up and recovered well. So all in all a canny combo i thought. I tried to give it a good whack but the sinker just snapped off as it was just 30lb straight through (don't worry I made sure there was no one down stream when I hit it) so shocker required deffo. Anyway I just put the mags on a bit for him and bingo, 40yrds on his chuck. I blanked and he got 3, HA. Good rod and reel combo.

I use the 525mag slidey awsome reel.but you must off whacked that led out for you
to snap 30lb line

30lb line will snap every time with anybody that can load the rod with a 6oz lead, you MUST use a shock leader for safe fishing.

totally agree with you tony safety is paramount but years ago that is all we used to use and i,ve seen some big hitters ping a lead out and very rearly have a snap off plus it depends on the quality of the line you use infact the sylcast used to be 26lb and 28lb/30lb mind it was quite thick to the lines we use today do,nt think it is stretched or whatever they do with them

most likely a poor knot was tied to the lead, or just bad cast timing,, i've used 30lb ordinary line now as a shock lead for alot of years and have never had a lead fly off , and i can hit a lead a fair way .

Wasn't having a go m8. Simply offering a possibility as to why it snapped off... And thats all. Sounds just like maybe a schoolboy error took place. :D

shockleaders

shockleaders

Couple of years ago fished the beach at meggies burn and cracked off a sinker using 50lb shocker.the poor bloke up the beach wern,t to happy with a busted seatbox I can tell ya!.I use 70lb now just in case.

I also use a mk1 orion (recently rebuilt) and 525 mag xtra with 18lb & shocker for almost all my fishing... I find it to be one of the best rods ive used... Same goes for the reel... No matter what i always go for these as first choice and will have these for as long as i can make them last! I bought the rod off one of my mates for £10 about 6-7 years ago

Erm.... Is this a trick question? Yes

do you use 30lb to make them ? if you do try 40lb or higher , knot it to a snappy of a decent size clipped to the lead. dont tie knots directly to the lead eye . the wires on leads is often too thick for a knot to form properly and pulls out when you cast. in my opinion anyways :D

oh and put plenty of spit on the line when drawing your knots tight.
