apart from price...is there any difference??? 50 m of fladen shockleader was summit like just under 3 quid but for 2.99 u get miles of 80lb line .....is there a big difference or does the shockleader comes in a bigger thinner spool for good looks? apart from the tapered shockleaders which are pretty bvious is there a difference between using 80lb line mono . or 80lb shockleader???/ thnks

if you used 80lb cheap line straight through you would need a ruddy big multiplier or fixed spool and casting any distance would be impossible

ooo sorry i needed to clarify ....i mean i use a 535 and 525 white 15-25lb line depending on mood. i do use shockleaders but my question was this for the leader bit would there be any difference in safety between 80lb mono and 80lb shockleader as i personally find 80lb mono easier to knot ....

I think the main difference is the lack in stretch from normal 80lb mono compared to shockleader and the fact that it doesn't knot as well as normal shockleader and also the fact that its not as safe as shockleader through lack of stretch. imho i would only use it as a rubbing leader for the rough stuff and short distances.
Recently a put a thread on wsf about where to buy bulk spools of shockleader caused a 77 reply argument of using normal mono for shockleader.
have a look and decide for yourself what to use.bulk spools of shockleader - World Sea Fishing Forums

If your like crack-off curtis or fishing quite rough ground i would just buy a big spool of cheap shockleader but if you fish clean beaches might aswell just buy a small 50 meter spool of good quility line.

very little difference

The shockleader is bright orange so i like it for judging the depth of the water as well as the safety aspect. Saying that i have used 40lb mono as a shock leader.

Never used shock leader before but i am going to, 20lb main line and 60lb shock leader as advised by the man in the tackle shop who informed me that depends on what breaking strian of the main line has to be.

I've always understood it's 10lb per ounce of lead weight. I use 50lb for a 5oz lead and never had the leader snap.

Would that 40lb leader be used with a 4oz sinker yes?

Lots of people just use 35lb straight through with no shockleader, obviously not for power casting, but if people can use 35lb straight though, why shouldn't people not power casting be able to use 40lb shockleader? i always use atleast 50lb but have used 40lb in the past with no bother.

40-50lb is fine if ya not trying to cast great distances but theres no rule saying what lb line to use but i do use 60lb shockleader in the winter months that is incase of hooking into a bigger fish and a chance of been able to lift it without any worries also same as the snood and rig body

i think at the moment ...i will use the 80lb mono ...until i crack that casting then i will the upgrade to 'propa' shockleaDERS ....this case i know the rig body etc is all same strength

For your shockleader its 10lb of line for every ounce of lead, you would need a 70lb leader if you ever use 7oz leads on a rough sea.
Personaly I use 12lb to 30lb main line depending where I fish and I only ever use 80lb shock whether its 5, 6 or 7oz weights for extra safety, and check your shock before every session in case its damaged.
As for shocks being more stretchy, some makes of shock have quite a bit of give and others hardly any so I dont think there's any difference to shock and mono as they are both actualy mono lines anyway just one re-branded as a shockleader there for being able to charge more for less line.

There is absolutely no difference between mono and shockleader so dont get confused its all line at the end of the day. The only difference is that some lines are better than others, ie stronger, thinner more abrasion resistant or less stretchy. So some are better suited to leaders than others

Save yourself loads of hassle!

Buy a spool of 80lb clear Ultima Powerflex for rig bodies (0.8mm)
70lb clear or orange ultima Powerflex for shockleader(0.75mm)

These lines are tried and tested and probably the most reliable on the market. The 70lb is widely used on the tournament casting field and is very very strong and reliable

You can pick up 4oz spools (200yds + per spool) for around £7-8.

Rutherfords own brand shockleader is also very good, I actually think its Ultima but only Andy R could answer that!!

Ive tried his orange shocker in 60lb and it mics out at 0.75mm so think its probably 70lb ultima in disguise!

What about Swivels?! :)

Easy. Don't use them on the load bearing part of a rig, there is no need to.

I use 80lb rig body with a Breakaway quick link at the bottom to attach my lead and a small 1/0 split ring at the top. A Gemini Rig Clip on the end of my shockleader completes the set-up. Totally safe, no hidden parts to go wrong like you have with swivels and can change rigs in seconds :)
