for the last few months i ahve had to buy my crab due to the fact that my traps have ben crap, also due to ill health, and of course weather been really crap not bee able to get there on me push bike . well after a nother dissapointing crab sesh a only got 8 so had to go and buy some, well got the shop and bought five, when a got them home went put them in the frideg noticed 1 of them very docile and wih further inspection (as far as am concerned) it was a hard back, Is this wat most of you anglerrs arsepaying good money for HARDBACKS i went into shop for PEELERS and my definition of a PEELER is a crab ready to discard its shell not a carb thts not likely to peel at all if kept in a fridge, well its going back to the shop in the morn for refund or foer a PEELER crab. What are your thoughts on this subjet do u get many hard backs thrown in in place of PEELER or is this be just a over sight by the shop im question ,

also i dont know who collectsthes crab but thi particlar crab had neary half of its leg missing and the legs that wre left nearyly all ends have been trie to see it was a peeler , surely it does not take that many attempts

ii am not gonna name the shop so dont ask

a don`t think the tackle shops give a s*** any more m8, yes there`s the exception, but in my experiences, they just wan`t our money.
that`s why a`v found me own worm supplier, at excellent rates, and get me own crab.

I got some last year mate, and had two or three that were the same.

Next time I was in shop I asked about it and they said that the odd one or two may need "bringing on"

I just said yeh, ok? Was nieve then like ;)

Yep bob, their just trying to claw in the money:D
The crab in question is getting a right old run around like. I'll guess north shields, south shields, simonside, south shields, it'll probs think it's on it's hols:D:D

I suspect that it's probably the fault of the supplier; everyone I know is struggling to get crab from any of the local rivers and I guess those that supply the shops are taking just about anything - even if there's just a hint of skin when they check the leg. I doubt the shop had bothered to go through & check all the crab and you've just been unlucky.

I do know though that the shop I use discarded one supplier last year who started out supplying them some very good crab, but soon started sending through more & more doggers that were no use to anybody - so as far as the owner was concerned that was it. He does his best to check all his crab & has a good set-up for keeping them (and yes, many of them do need several days or more to come on before they're ready to use) & he'll always tell customers if their crab are good to go or proper walnuts.

Gary :)

thxn for replies lads, like i say i have my own traps and for the past 11 seaons have nearly always had plenty live fresh crab through til end october early nov and like to think a know as mcuh about crab as the next man. as a can uusally keep them for about 4--5 wee and jiust about know wat snotty, slavery, wateryis worth keeping and when a crab is gonna end up a peeler or not.

any way rant over and to the llad who wished to knoiw which shop , sorry not able to tell, as this post was not to cause trouble, just to highlight the problem and to let people know be cafreful when buying your crab so your not disspointd when you fishing just ask before you buy, and if more anglers refused these snotty slavery, hard backs mebbes then the crabbers would not sell them on to the shops and the anglers not wasting their money who buy their crab will not end up annoyed and dissapointed

i make them check the crabs infront of me so i know what i'm getting. shops shouldnt be robbing folk are they will go down the swanny.

I ordered a hundred sent up from devon, because the local lad Id hoped would supply me let me down. And 2 of them were hardbacks. Not funny after shelling out 90 quid. :(

Had the odd 1 hardback in with my peelers on 2 separate occasions in the past, I just put it down to a mistake. I don't collect my own as I don't really know how to or have time to tbh.
