Norman..fitting a marine radar ( at least the one i have ) takes no more skill thathan fitting a fish finder or chart plotter, as long as you know how to push in a premoulded plug into the radome and another the back of the display unit the job is done.............................dont know how to use it though, or the fish finder and plotter come to think about it lol lol.
Anway that opens up another topic ,which we have all brought up in the past that there is no legal obligation to have any sort of licence or training to operate a boat, even having adequate insurance is up to the opereater/owner

still got my RYA use of radar at sea text book from the marine and tech somehwere bob if you want a borrow

thanks Mark, but i was only kidding i did my radar course this year at south tyneside college.............cheers for the offer though

was nearly 20 years ago when I did em, so I suspect things will have changed....lots!

very primitive kit by comparison to days wizzardy

thought about doing a couple of the RYA courses again this year, what did it cost you if you don\'t mind me asking??

Ray. I also work in Security and these costs you are on about must be for the new Licensing scheme mate. Your Employer should meet these costs and if they dont, seek out a new company mate. I can understand that your employer might want the money back off you if you leave your employment within two years of him paying the fees but you shouldnt have to pay the bi-annual fee mate.

cheers.
george.

a boat i suppose in many aspects can be compared to a car ,just as dangerous in the wrong hands ,yet no insurence no steering/driving test ,makes you wonder ,but back to the subject of electrics ,how is fitting a spur any more difficult than fitting a plug ?as long as common sense is used and proper shielding etc its a 5 min job bar the chasing out ,i think the rules will need amending if there to have any affect

i think what we should remember is that we do things in life that we want to do and also to become, for instants i served my time in the ship yards doing marine plumbing and also went to college to do domestic plumbing. Now this was my choice to do this, to become a fully qualified plumber. This is the same for all people whatever industry they work in they want to become qualified and must become qualified.
Yeah in the real world people are doing work that they should not be doing but thats life. what the government is trying to do is to erradicate these people who are trading as tradesmen when they are not yes they may have plenty experience but no paperwork. The point is that this is ruining the industry thus causing all these new regs, qualifications etc.

give it a year and things will settle down lol

but once again its the man in the street that wants to do a bit to his own property that\'ll no doubt suffer more.

why not just say, operating professionally as a plumber/sparky is illegal - end of.

works for accountants/solicitors etc. Illegal to practice as a solicitor but not illegal for joe public to do his own conveyancing, and if he screws up it his own fault, if you think about it that is true of nearly all professions, doctors, architects, surveyors, estate agents, financial consultants. you can do the job of all of them for yourself with no legal redress.

As I see it I could stick an ad in the paper tomorrow, offering electrical services and the only time I\'m likely to be preosecuted is whe they catch me out, which might be never

The sad fact of todays society is that we are fast becoming a compensation culture and if anything goes wrong then someone gets their arses sued to buggery. And in someplaces we are fast becoming a rip off culture as well and there are some out there who want to rip your eyes out for a pile of shite that they call work and the legislation is there to protect the many from the few who will and have done this......the more people I see coming into my office to gain their qualification the better....at least that way we have a fighting chance..

Mark, cant remember wether it was 25 or 35 quid, whichever it was it was good value for money, gives you a good basic idea of the unit and what it does

i agree get rid of the cowboys but why should a bloke who wants to do the work himself on his own property not have the right to do so ?
red tape makes me sick :casstet:

simply because that man in the street ends up selling his house to some unlucky bugger that has paid good money for the property that some unqulified cowboy has bodged up, then the said man has to pay again to have it put right.
at least with the new laws coming in he will have redress on the person that sold him the property therefore it is up to the house owner to compensate accordingly, i laugh at all these unqualified people who say the jobs are easy to do...do they Know the regs ?? do they have the correct tools ( meters ) to take the rellavent readings ??? AND for those that have the the experience sit the exams and pass....after all it has been said that its easy!!!!! i think NOT otherwise everyone would be doing it legally

My 2 pennies worth.:

Sless, can’t you see that people are having a serious discussion here, nobody cares what b100dy month the news item was in. :)

Mind you if he’d invaded my space like that I might have done something that would have brought tears to his eyes. :exclam:

On the electrical regs / tradesmen issue. Whilst regulation of the competance of tradesmen to provide services to housholders or other business’ is in my opinion a step in the right direction to erradicating rogue tradesmen. On the other hand, regulation of a householder who wants to carry out work on his own house is not the way to go. If they are not making a living out of it then leave them alone.

With respect to regulation of tradesmen where do you start. Gas and electricity are dangerous commodities, so approved examinations on current working standards and health and safety issues is the way to go. But how do you deal with a tradesman with 40 years experience and just wanting to work the last five years or so before drawing his pension. Theses regulations need introducing in phases over many years (say 20) so that the older tradesmen is not excluded from earning a living but the younger tradesmen need to update their knowledge on a regular basis.

Perhaps there should be some kind of trading register for other construction industry skills as well. In the USA they have a system of registration with the local authority and if you do a bad job the customer can report you. The quality of the work is then examined and if the complaint is upheld then your struck off the register and can\'t trade in that county again without risking prosecution and jail or fines.

many good points raised there Chris, however these are not overnight changes the trade have known that they were coming for quite a while and have had time to aquire the rellevent qualifications, your point regarding someone wanting to serve out there remaining working time, i feel that had they should have enough practable experience to pass the exam no problem as long as they have been constantly updating themselves with new proceedures and changes in both regulation and legislation.
One thing the new building regs are also doing is providing a documentated paper trail, traceability to see who done what, where and when, so if something goes wrong someone is accountable, it will have very little impact on the professional tradesperson who allready has pride in their job and profesion, we do it as a matter of course to provide our customers with the best service we possibly can,and hopefully give value for money.
Thanks to the mods for moving this to somewhere more suitable.
