Guys

Got a 20hp evinrude outboard , coughs sometimes and stalls.
Not the best starter
any views ?? plugs a litttle black etc.
Also when top is off ,looks like a face plate is missing off carb but been told this is ok and normal (a bit petrol runs ot and lies in head )

Any one know best place for service.

I have a car battery that runs f/finder/lights etc , but not engine as it is a pull.
Do you think I would be better trying to find a caravan leisure battery ?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Meatloaf. I havent worked on outboards, but i do a lot with old car engines. If your plugs are a bit black then the fuel/air mixture is a bit rich. That can be adjusted via the screws on the carb. As for that faceplate. If petrol is getting out then air is getting in. This could also tribute towards the rich mix. Make a gasket ( you can get gasket paper from any auto shop ) and fit it to the face. That should stop the leak. Hope this helps.

if you want it service, PA Lynch in morpeth have always done a cracking job on motors I've taken them over the years

mike's spot on about getting the holes sealed to try sort the mixture out, I'd do that first before trying to adjust the mixture screws, getting multiple carbs balanced once you start fiddling with mixtures is a tricky job

I'd be inclined to take the bowls off the bottom of the carbs and clean them out thoroughly, while the carbs are off give all the jest and needle valve a good blast with an aerosol carb cleaner (don't do that with the carbs on the motor)
