just after a bit advice, looking to spend up to £2000 pound on a small boat upto about 16,18ft,been told its 75 quid a year to launch from the boat club at south shields, also how difficult is the vhf short range radio test and whats the running costs like.all knowledge appreciated.cheers:)

vhf test if you can call it that is easy so its no bother.

£2000?? mmmrrr may need to add say £600 to £1000 on that if you wish a boat with a trailer a fish finder and gps plotter, my plotter was £560 and it was nothing special.

Running costs depends what engine you get but normal day with the range you would be doing will be around the £25-£30 mark..other costs serviceing and launch fee's cant help you for an outboard.

Good luck with your search anyway.

Check on ebay, there is a good looking pilot 520 blue/white for sale in Durham with Yamaha 30hp and auxilary engine and all the gear. At the moment it's under £1,000. Just list, Nearest first and your post code. it's got 3 days to go.
Ive had one of these, and the're good stable boats.

Mate.

I got my boat for £2000 (18ft Plymouth pilot) from Dunbar with 2 engines (Evinrude 35hp and a Mercury 7.5hp), VHF (I worked to BA for 13years as a dispatcher so knew how to handle a radio but its not hard to pass), Lowrance X85 fish finder and a trailer. You can get deals out there and this might be the best time to get one at the end of the season. As for south shields, I launch from there and yes it is £75 per year with a 1 off payment of £20 for the access key ( but I have not used it yet this year as the barrier was broken). I normally go out for about 12hours a go and it costs about £30 but I don't really wander too far away (16 miles straight out from the piers or up to the Can and wander back hitting certain wrecks).

VHF, “the course that nobody fails.” Treat it as a day out with other boaters a bit of a laugh and something useful to learn.

Don’t forget to leave some cash aside from the boat purchase so you can buy the safety gear as well. There’s loads of good info on the RNLI website RNLI - Royal National Lifeboat Insitution

Most launch sites require proof of insurance before you can use them, so add another £100~200 a year for that.

Then the really expensive bit – lead is costing up to £1.40/kg just now and if you fish the heavy ground or wrecks you’ll get through a lot of it. :)

I got a nice 17ft Wilson Flyer, trailer, Yamaha 30HP, fenders, fuel tank, boat cover, huge battery, battery case and other bits and bobs for £2200.

You can get them cheaper but to be honest you get what you pay for, look for a boat thats been looked after and the engine has been serviced by a firm

I've bought a few boats now and if you want any help when viewing I would give you second opinion if you want and its local ish of course

The other boat I have in Scotland I only paid a £1000 for and its every bit as good as the Wilson Flyer. I got that from the owner of Endevour boats, he gets trade ins that he often gets rid of.

As far a radios and fish finders and GPS gadgets go ask for them for chrissy prezzies. I would not by a boat for the gadgets

I make a monthly donation to the RNLI the best money every spent, those chaps are your bezzy mates when you buy a small fishing boat

as stated you will probs need more than 2k to get you up and running unless you hit lucky and find one with everything you need like life jackets, flares, fire extingushers, vhf, anchor, first aid kits, owning a boat is like a money pit but however you cant beat the feeling of getting out when you want and hitting big fish
i have a seahog and on a long session it costs me around 45 pound in fuel then 8 pound on oil but that covers me alot of miles i always make sure both tanks are full before i set off for peace of mind

Speak to the Sunderland tourist information center. As long as your a member you can launch your boat, rib etc. Its not just for Yachts.
