Just got my hands on a 7000 but need to
know if you can up the gear ratio to approx
6.1 and if a new CT cage will fit.
If this is pos can you let me know where
to get the parts.
Thanks...
There used to be a conversion kit to take the 6500 from 5:1 to 6:1 Im pretty sure there was also one for the 7000. Theres also a conversion bar which you can use in place of the level wind insted of buying the CT cage, Im not sure you can get a CT cage but if you can and its owt like the 6500, its around £35. Ill try and dig out some links.
seems like spending a lot of cash on something that dont need done with the gearing, there is nothing wrong with what they are. at the end of the day why did you not just buy a penn or a slosh.as for the ct cage they are expensive and a bar for anything from 10 to 15 qiud does the same job

Ah yes you can put a bar in but this will
then make the cage weak as you have
cut out the top bar and put in one just
with 2 tiny screw's. As for going for a
penn or a slosh well the slosh is not
a good reel as i have just put one in the
bin only used 30 times as it has stripped
all the cogs in the reel and the penn are
just way too much money for me to pull
out in one go so this is why im doing it
this way. Get the reel and fish with it
and at the same time get the bits i need
to make it the way i want and then it
will be a one off also.

Was it the reel that stripped it's own cogs or did a heavy handed fisherman have anything to do with it, I've used a slosh for years with no problem at all, if I have a good fish on (which isn't as often as I would like) then I get the rod to do the work. As far as gearing up a reel, are you not going back to square one, you've stripped the cogs on a high geared reel yet you still want to gear up another reel, unless you remove the source of the gears stripping then the next reel will follow suit. I don't care whether it's a slosh, an Abu or a super tough Penn, if you try and rive a fish in with it it will fail eventually. I can understand perfectly the sense behind wanting to do away with the level wind but if you want your reel to take line in faster then wind the handle faster.
Only my opinions mind.
I have used Abu reels for something like 40 years. i have an old old 7000 I bought in the 70's. I changed the bushes to bearings and had new sideplates 5 years ago. Apart from drag washers and a new levelwind it is still a cracking reel. I have a spare spool loaded with 30lb braid for the boat and use 20lb from the shore. rinsed under the hot water tap after every session and stripped down and cleaned / oiled every six months or so. I use only 2 brake blocks of the short size and yes it takes a while to reel in but then there aint much line left on the spool after the cast. you can get the sinker on the surface a good 60 yards out if you reel in quick! The 7500 is faster but a little bigger with more line capacity. I have found no problems with mine at all in the last 10 years. Also have a 7000 CT3, a black plated 7000 (different rachet arrangement) and 2 7000 LD's which are great on the boat. They said in the 70's they would last a lifetime and mine are certainly doing the job up to now.
Spares are from Purefishing.co.uk
Sadly could not resurrect my original 9000 as no spools available so went in the bin. Still, who stocks spares for reels 40 years old? Wish I still had my 9000C with 2 speed wind; would pull just about anything in. Gave it and a rod to a novice angler a few years ago and it then went to a car boot!
