ABU 900 puzzle ???

Hi all you knowledgable people. I sent an Abu Big Fish 9000 reel away almost a year ago to have it serviced 'professionally' to a company advertising on the web. After waiting all of this time and missing a whole season they have returned it as they cannot get a particular spare part that is needed.

OK so far, I understand that sometimes there are problems and I was willing to wait. However, they have now returned it saying they cannot get the part and that they need to clear their workbenches. Once again so far so good but take a look at what has been returned !!!

A jigsaw to the 'non techy' that I am.

Does anyone know who would be able to put the jigsaw back together and would it be worthwhile?

I am willing to pay any reasonable amount as the reel cost the best part of £100 early last year and it would be nice to have it back on the run for next season if possible.

Over to you experts and cheers *****

have you tried contacting abu and asking them to send you a layout of the reel then you should be able to put it together yourself and save a bit of money just a thought

Hi again all, thanks for the info, Mikes reel repair looks the business but I'll need to see if I can make sense of the schematics. In the meanwhile if anyone does know of someone who would take this on on my behalf I'd be grateful for the info

cheers again*****

If everything is on show that you were sent back, at a glance there are certainly some parts missing with the most obvious being the reel handle.
There is also a couple of tubular springs missing which sit under the yoke and I cannot see the ratchet pawl which prevents the reel turning backwards.
It wont be a cheap fix and may rack up to nearly the price of a new reel so it's a judgement call.

Hi Drifter and thanks for your expertise. I checked the box and found the handle and one spring, they were hidden under packing. The photo was probably hiding the other bits and pieces.
I take your point about the cost being worthwhile as it does look to be a substantial job to rebuild. I should probably look upon it as a project in hand but time is the problem !!!!

cheers ****

Hi Mick, have you tried ID Tackle, ask for Ronny he may be able to sort you out. Ive known Ronny since the early eighties when he had RS Tackle in Collingwood St. When i was a kid i took my first multiplier to pieces and didnt have a clue how to put it back together again, i gave him a box of pieces and he sorted it out. Give them a call as he works part time i think he's off mon and thurs but not sure.

Good luck.

Thanks for all of the advice and suggestions, I now need to decide on the best course of action but I know it will be expensive..............cheers

Hi Mick, I assume you were happy with the reel or you would not be seeking advice or preparing to spend money. Given that you now have a shed load of ABU spare parts, I reckon it would be a neat idea to simply buy an identical ABU reel. I accept that not everyone has the required expertise to strip and re-build a multiplier but in the future, if you need to replace a part there are many guys on NESA who enjoy "tinkering" and would happily do it for you.

It looks almost like the normal set up of any ABU reel. What is the part that can't be soarced! I would take it to ID fishing at Ncle Ronnie is definatly the man who can fix it.

Thanks again to everyone for all the suggestions. I will try ID Fishing first and see if they can help. If not I will probably write it off as a bad experience.
cheers...............
