Hello guys, I've been sea fishing for about 2 months and I have only really fished hendon prom the good thing is i havent blanked yet! The bad thing is I dont seem to be able to catch a cod. Is there any easier places to catch codling from? I know that sounds pretty stupid but what I mean is hendon not a cod known hotspot? any advice on rigs etc to target them is highly appreciated and venues to fish around sunderland/ south shields. thanks guys

Hello mate, Just pot luck really imo. Many people will say put on big baits on a pennel rig. Common cod baits are crab, lug, runnydown, mussel. You could try roker pier or the rathouse, also along the cliffs at whitburn/marsden and south sheilds pier/proms/groynes etc. Good luck.

try the piers, roker or shields, always people on them and just by watching the fisherman on them you will learn and pick up the way to go on

Cheers for the advice guys, I won't be going near any cliffs! I am sort fo learning the ropes but i've been coarse fishing for 20 years so i learnt a lot of skills that i've found have helped a lot. I bought some frozen bait from a mail order website called baits r us and I got some frozen peeler crab from them. I am a bit concerned they are rubbish because i've been reading how they should be peeled before freezing and the lungs removed whereas these ones still have there shells on and lungs in does that make much difference I used some last week and they seemed to be alright smelling nice (to the fish lol).
I had what i think is a nice flounder of 1lb 6 oz from hendon prom last week on frozen mussels i feel chuffed with that one!:):)

Snap mate!! started fishing again about 5 month ago, tried many different marks with all kinds of baits ffom peeler to lug, rag mussell razor. the lot. even braved the cliffs at eyemouth and st abbs. tried different rigs, pennels, up n over rigs, pulleys. been night fishing. day fishing, and iv'e only ever had small whiting.
i think its quite a bit of luck to be honest. keep at it and we'll get there. sooner rather than lately hopefully as my lass is beginning to wonder if im actually going fishing or having a affair.

this is rich coming from a non shore angler:rolleyes:

certainly luck has its place:exclam:but as you lads try new marks, new tactics, read the posts on here and learn:exclam:,you will find you get luckier.

theres an old guy on here called codseeker, fished since adam was a boy,hes lucky every time he is out

only other thing safety first (its sunday and im in preaching mode:D:D:D

Hello mate, the good advice from above will be very helpful to you. Try to get to the piers and fish in deep water. You will always have a chance of codling at these marks. Stay well away from cliff edges unless you are fishing with an experienced angler who knows the area and frequently fishes there. Also try to research some shore fishing marks by visiting them on the big tides at low water. Look for gulleys and areas that may hold food, the fish if they are about will feed here as the tides floods and ebbs. As for luck, this does play a part in catching a fish, however experienced anglers have built up knowledge from trying different methods over many years and they know when and where to fish depending on tides, conditions of the sea types of baits to use etc. Hopefully your first cod will come soon. Hope this helps.

P.S, lingking mentioned an old guy called Codseeker, this man only catches codling because of his mate called Stu. Stu is the brains behind coddies success. LOL

First cod

First cod

To maximise your chances I would start with the bait you use , fresh good quality bait, ie live yellow tails, good blow lug or if you can get it live crab & White rag would increase your chances. Secondly if you don't know any of the beach marks or rock marks very well then stick to deep water marks like the piers on big tides. Or you could ask coddy for a invite pull cod out ov a puddle he can

the best advice is to join one of the clubs in your area where you will meet up with other members who will show you marks and give you ideas where best to catch cod as the lads have said any of the piers in your area will throw up plenty of cod . davy.

Firstly, You learn very little on forums apart from where the marks are. You need to be out there fishing with somebody experienced enough to progress and catch fish quickly. Join a club and ask the top rods within the club If you can tag along. They are far more willing to give you information if you're out there fishing than sitting at home on a computer.

...or you can go down the other route of fishing a pier constantly, watching and learning how to catch fish from there but are screwed If you want to fish anywhere else and take it to the next level.

Join a club and fish different marks is the way forward.
