Hi,
First ever post. having a problem with a new reel, I usually use sloshes but have just purchased an Akios 656,this is the first reel I've had where the spool rotates on the spindle, took it down the Tyne to try it out yesterday and during every cast the 20lb line was trying to leap off the spool, this was with two break blocks and mag breaking system set on max,the line was the same brand I always use but I had to constantly thumb the spool during the cast to stop it birdsnesting.does anyone use one of these reels and is there something I don't know HELP

Try tightening your spool tension cap next to the handle, it may be loose.

Thats all i can think of tbh

Make sure to try and leave a bit play in the spool or you will probably goose the bearings if everything is too tight

is the reel brand new you are the first to use it and what type of cast do you use overhead thump/pendulum/ off the ground.

ps were abouts you located. john

Sorry John forgot to mention that I use an off the ground cast when possible and overhead thump otherwise

hi was hoping you lived closer to me as i would of had a look at it for you these reels are very user friendly cant imagine why the overuns would not to look at things your reel and cast.

Your 20lb line might be quite thick & your Lead too light? Spool is going round faster than the line can be pulled off it maybe? Just a thought as you dont state what you are using.
15lb line & a 5oz Lead well suited to your Reel & worth a try. Also might be worth cleaning out the bearings & replace oil with heavy Gear Oil.
If all this fails, there is something basically wrong with it & it would be worth taking back to the shop.

You wernt casting into a Wind by any chance? that would obviously make a difference too.

I'd be straight back to the shop to ask advice, rather than maybe messing with it and voiding the warranty!

I agree with Kayos tbh mate, take it back to shop. I have an Akios 656 and don't have any of the problem you describe, I cast off the ground and over thumps. As stated before try tightening the spool tension caps, but like said I would take it back.

hi guys, thanks for all the posts and advice, think NESA is a great site, very helpful. just to clear up a few points-the rod is a Sonic SK4, I cast off the ground using 20lb line, 50lb shocker and 5oz sinker, using a heavier weight sounds like a good idea. the reel was bought from an online company called "FISHTEC", I phoned them yesterday and spoke to a guy called Ceri Owen and explained the problem to him, he said that the spool was SUPPOSED to run fast and that I would always have to use my thumb as a break during the cast, but the amount of pressure I've had to use results in lost distance. today I have contacted Akios who have told me to send the reel back to them so that they can check it out so watch this space! thanks again for all the advice

That bloke from fishtec is talkin a pile of -hite no way shud you have to thumb the reel.

As a test fill the reel with line, tape the line up. With the mags on full spin the spool. How long does it spin on max and min mags?

It should be less than 12 secs on full mags and more than 30 on min

With the mags on full if its spinning for more than 10-12 seconds then the mags aren't working and the reel is posibly at fault and you will only get more birdsnests.

If it hardly spins and stops on full mags then its definitely caster fault!

Because the akios is a smaller spool are you sure your not getting spool slip, resulting in the nests?

You will probably need some form of rubber strap or thumbie to hold onto the spool when any power is applied.

iv used these reels extensively ,,unless its been drowned in oil I can only think the spool pressure dials too loose, and the spools packet to the hilt,,,, take a bit of line off , tighten the spool pressure knobby,,,lust so theres a tiny amount of play,,, that should cure it,, these reels are casting machines straight out the box,,but don't over do the oil bit,, and tighten down your drag before you cast them
